The best sounding MP-3 audio encoder out there.

I did a fresh windows 7 install before re-ripping all of my CDís I installed the 3.99.1 lame_enc.dll into the Windows\System32 folder audio grabber found it and my other audio programs use it as well. Hay for you audio files out there the Windows 7 has a problem with there Sample Rate Converter I have tested it with a spectrum analyzer the converter creates artifacts into the converted audio.

You can find the Hotfix at http://hotfixv4.microsoft.com/Windows%207/Windows%20Server2008%20R2%20SP1/sp2/Fix389997/7600/free/441951_intl_i386_zip.exe

Ok before any update back up your files.

In my opinion still the best encoder for ripping CD's.

Sadly, at least in my view, CD ripping will eventually become a thing of the past.

For a good amount of time now, studio recordings exceed what are currently offered on CD's.

Nero already offers the HD AAC as part of Nero 11. Eventually, other software will offer the same.

I think the only major holdout in the case of major software is the when, not if, when both iTunes for Windows and Winamp include HD AAC.

People still wonder why not many companies offer either .ALAC (Apple Lossless) or .FLAC albums. Simple really, they are holding off until cloud providers get more well etablished (i.e. like iCloud from Apple), and two they are waiting for more major countries (including the U.S.) to have a more nationwide pure fiber-optic Internet setup (similar to Japan).

Then both uploads and download speeds will make what most people consider "high-speed" broadband seem as slow as people see a 33.6kb/ps dial-up modem seems to them now. At that point, the mere concept of CD's or even Blu-Ray discs seem completely obsolete.

I still love LAME, but someday, maybe sooner than expected, disc based media will become something a thing of the past.

Sad but absolutely true, my friend!Well said!!!

O.k. Much has been said about Lame encoder..These are the facts-so far:

1.Lame is the best (lossy) mp3 encoder existing this moment!!It's last STABLE version (3.98.4) surpassed in quality even encoders you pay for..Brilliant people are working onto its next versions (3.99-4.00) so as to make our lives better..RESPECT this!!

2.It's FREE,supporting the most popular format on the planet

3. It works sweet with Audiograbber,EAC and a lot of other 'hosts'

4.The Lame executable and the DLL that comes with it (when you download it) cannot run by themselves-usually you put them in the folder of the application you are using for music transcoding /playing

5. Although boring..Try to READ the installation instructions or tutorials where necessary.

6.Clean your system of old codecs, codec packs and everything else that might decrease its performance or get in the way of neutral software functionality and make things complicated-driving you crazy

6.Re-Install the software you use for transcoding and point again the right path to the Lame exec. and DLL

7.Lame encoder comes with certain "switches".Learn how to use them (it's all in the "read me" document) and you will be able to SHAPE the encoding process in the EXACT WAY YOU LIKE!!

Very bad codec, but somehow popular among kids. Cuts frequencies like crazy. Output files are actually 16 or 20kHz! Much better quality with the same bitrate offers you AAC or OGG. Encoding is also very slow.

If you are getting bad quality output from a good quality input, or the encoding is slow, then its you that is doing something seriously wrong, not the encoder! LAME only takes a few seconds per song, and that is encoding with q=0 (the slowest but best precision).

The default precision is q=5, but thats by no means bad!LAME isnt the best encoder out there in terms of quality of output, however it IS the best MP3 encoder! If you encode a wav file using the options:V=3 q=0you will get a very good quality variable bitrate file that retains all the nice audio acoustics without the mp3 artifacts. Even at V=4 or V=5 you wont get these!

Variable bitrate is the way to go as you dont waste bitrate. If you need a definitive file size, use ABR 2-pass instead.

Note the capital and lower case letters, v is a different option to V, as q is different to QThe problem with a lot of even new encodes people do out there is they use grossly outdated software (for some software 6 months can make it grossly outdated!) or the wrong encode settings (or the wrong combination of settings).

Using a 6 year old LAME you wont get the same quality or speed as the very latest 3.99 builds. The best encoder out there at the moment is NeroAACenc, which is an AAC reference encoder. It is far superior to the Apple (iTunes) AAC encoder. Thing about AAC is, instead of getting the artifact sounds it will gradually cut out the frequencies that gives the audio its depth or warmth. The iTunes AAC encoder even at higher bitrates shows this tendency, and again a VBR mode should be used (like NeroAACenc q value, q=0.5 default, higher=better quality).

iTunes AAC has probably held back the uptake of AAC, just like Quicktimes h.264 implementation i believe has held back h.264 uptake (encoding quality is pathetic)! So, use LAME 3.99a14 or newer, use the correct output settings (V=3 or 4, q=0), and make sure the input quality is good! For the average song, these settings will be around 150BKPS or so, but the quality will be superior to some mp3 files ive heard even at 320kbps.Psychology also plays a part of it.

People will often swear one audio file (same works for video) is superior or inferior to another if they think its codecencoder A vs B, if they for some reason dislike encoder B they will swear its inferior, or that A is superior, but wht you could really be showing them is an identical audio file :)

If you want to install LAME codec, you need to download either LAME ACM codec:

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/LAME_ACM_Codec.htm

or LAME Directshow filter:

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/LAME_Directshow_filter.htm

or preferably both. Follow the installation instructions on the pages, unless you're doing something more complicated.
And an excellent codec, all needed components available too! :)

Everybody knows that LAME isn't the best, or the fastest audio encoder because the technology is old, and there is little room for improvement nowadays. But It's the most popular in the world, simply becouse *.mp3 is the de facto standart for lossy(compressed) audio. Of course there are such encs like Ogg Vorbis(aotuv) and AAC(from Apple), but Apple's isn't free (like LAME for instance) and Ogg is not so popular. Perhaps in time the lossles formats will become the choice of the mainstream user (assuming the tendency for larger capacity storage media continues to expand).

this rating is for the 3.98.2 overall, not this specific. just wanted to clarify there's nothing wrong with 3.98r (as its work name is), its actual amazing n i cannot see why scene still hold on to .97. however, should be mentioned that to work w/ ie. Exact Audio Copy u need the lame3.98.2-vc6.zip (from RAREwarez), since the verison deriving from latest compiler seem to malfunction with ie. EAC.

Admin's Note: The version you mentioned (lame3.98.2-vc6.zip - from RareWares) is a "bundle compiled with VC6/Intel Compiler 9.1 - intended for older Windows OSes."

I have build a classic lame_enc.dll v3.98.2, everything included with the latest version and I also used the fastest compilers on the planet.
Get it here and test it with your favorite encoder, it works with CDex, VirtualDub, etc:
http://delphi.andreotti.nl/lame_enc.zip
See the speedy testresults in the zip-file.
Just overwrite your LAME_ENC.DLL with this one.

Hi guys. There is no installation at all. You must go to the DOS prompt and type a line like:
g:\lame98\lame.exe -h -V 4 g:\wavfiles\track01.wav g:\destinationfiles\track01.mp3
and it works.
Or you can try a frontend program like RazorLame; or you can have the WON-DER-FUL Foobar player, tell it where the lame.exe is, and tell it you want to convert the files in the playlist.
Hope this is useful.
Beauty will save the world.

The louder the opinion, the less fact behind it. The subtle points are mostly well taken, the screaming THIS IS BEST! posts invariably wrong at the core.

Legally, using LAME is like patronizing a speakeasy. Using WMA is like having a breath tester installed on your car. It's your choice, but sound quality is pretty low down the priority tree.

I have tested Lame mp3,itunes 7 AAC, Wma Pro and Ogg.
Itunes AAC with Vbr is the best audio codec.
Sometimes even 320kbs is not enough for lame.
Its quite obvious that MP3 format technology is old.
Audio codec: Itunes AAC Vbr
Video codec: H264

I have come to this page as I wanted to look into updates of lame_enc.dll from 3.96 but from what I see I find no reason to fix what ain't broke.

For some of you that think that you know about sound then you may be wrong by saying otherwise than LAME is the best mp3 encoder that exist to this day! Fraunhofer is a very good encoder though @128kbps possibly sounds better than lame in some occasions but rarely. Overall LAME beats every mp3 encoder at almost any rate.
Stick with this one as every one that truly knows about sound will agree with this.

hi,yesterday i rip my metallica cd to cbr 160kbps mp3 using itunes 7.0.1.8,the sound quality really good! no clicks or pops unlike many people said.maybe many people fooled by arguments over old version of itunes that really have bad mp3 encoder.the lastest one have good mp3 encoder.always update to the latest one.itunes use \"smart encoding adjustment\" to maximize mp3 quality

so peoples, use itunes instead of lame,it really good! if you don\'t believe me,try it yourself

link below is the link to mp3 of don\'t download this song by weird al.if you have dbpoweramp, the dbpoweramp will show that song encoded by itunes cbr 160kbps.try to listen it.you will know how good itunes mp3 encoder are

In reply to AKIRA's post, yes WMA is a decent format, but it has some high frequency issues that tend to fatige the average listeners's ears over time. MP3 sounds much more liquid and organic than WMA, which by comparison sounds very digital and harsh. Besides, if you are looking for sheer quality, go with ogg vorbis or better yet a lossless format like Monkey's Audio, FLAC, Apple Lossless, Wavepack, OptimFrog, or any of the other numerous mathematically lossless formats available.

GUYS!

IF YOU WANT RIP CD AND JUST LISTEN THE MUSIC IN COMPUTER,YOU BETTER RIP TO WMA (IF YOU LIKE LISTEN SONG IN WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER) OR RIP TO HE-AAC (IF YOU LIKE TO LISTEN IN WINAMP)

BOTH FORMAT MUCH BETTER THAN MP3.128KBPS OF WMA IS ENOUGH FOR TRANSPARENT.WHILE THE HE-AAC AROUND 96KBPS IS ENOUGH FOR TRANSPARENT.THAT MEAN YOU SAVE YOUR DRIVE SPACE TOO!

HAVE YOU HEARD PEOPLES SAID WMA IS WORSE THAN MP3 BEFORE? THAT'S WRONG! THEY SAID LIKE JUST BECAUSE THEY HATE MICROSOFT.SO DON'T FOOL BY THEM.

THINK AND BE WISE!

BUT IF YOU WANT LISTEN MUSIC IN PORTABLE DEVICE THAT ONLY SUPPORT MP3,LAME'S MP3 DEFINITELY THE BEST MP3 ENCODER,NO DOUBT.

THE BEST! mp3 encoder this side of the universe.

For superb quality mp3's head to rarewares.org,grab the latest speedy compile of LAME 3.98a6,download CDEX/Audiograbber as ripper software, put the lame_enc.dll in the directory of the rippers and choose Variable Bitrate,Method New,VBR 2,Joint Stereo...your mp3's will be around 224kbps but the quality i promise you is excellent!

Kudos to developers for proving that LAME encoded mp3's still provide excellent quality and best compatibility compared to more recent codecs like Mpeg4-AAC,Ogg Vorbis.

"version 14.0 alpha is best (for CBR 128 kbps).i test it with rock song,i use wmp with surround sound to max to listen it,and i see the improvement,i recommend this version for encoding CBR 128 kbps"

sorry, that version is bad,use the recommended 3.97 beta 2 version.

i always rip to lame's mp3 by winamp (make sure the lastest version.my recommended VBR settings are:

VBR Minimum Bitrate:32 (change manually)
VBR Maximum Bitrate:128 (change manually)
Quality:alt-preset-extreme
VBR Q:0(change manually)

note:don't alt-preset-fast extreme.although it's faster but it's a little bit worse than alt-preset-extreme.you can notice it especially if you listen your mp3 with windows media player with maximum srs wow effect and you have very good listening and good headphone.

some peoples said fraunhofer (fhg) mp3 is better than lame at equal bitrate.that is true to all lame preset except extreme preset and insane preset.so lame still the winner in most situation.that why i recommend you use extreme preset.

No doubt about it, lame is the highest quality encoder. For the longest time, I used BLADE ENC at 256kbps. But a friend switched me over and I swear I can tell no difference from a 320kbps MP3 encoded w/ LAME to the original audio cd. Apple should ditch their useless AAC and opt for MP3's encoded with lame. The highest quality I've yet to come across, next to lossless, of course.

But use some mp3 player such as foobar2000,I found that it use the genre list from "id3.html".
