WavPack is a powerful compression format that helps you obtain lossless or high quality lossy audio files using a singular hybrid compression method.
This version of WavPack has been redesigned almost from scratch in order to obtain the best results.
There are two compression methods used by WavPack. One is lossless, and it is similar to the way WinZip compressors work, and the other one is lossy.
In the first case, sound quality is not affected at all and the original information is not lost. The compression rate for the lossless method is between 30% and 70%.
The lossy compression method is truly innovative. Apart from the small high quality lossy file that can be used independently, WavPack also creates a correction file. This means you can perform full lossless restoration, even if you have chosen to compress your music to a lossy format.
WavPack is compatible with any PCM audio format with the following standards: 8, 16, 24, and 32-bit ints; 32-bit floats; mono, stereo, and multichannel; sampling rates from 6 to 192 kHz.
WavPack runs in Windows, Linux and OS X and it has an easy to use command line interface featuring wildcards and destination directory.
Additionally, it contains Java and C# decoders and encoders, ID3v1 and APEv2 tags for metadata and MD5 audio checksums for verification and identification.
WavPack is an excellent choice for various categories of users, including experts. It helps you save disc space and still enjoy high sound quality of your music collection. Additionally, it has been tested and it works well with the most popular software.
