Why VLC Handles What Windows Media Player Can't

Windows Media Player asks Windows for a decoder every time you open a file, so when the right DirectShow filter is missing, playback simply fails.

VLC skips that whole dependency chain by carrying its own decoders inside the program. MP4, MKV, AVI, MOV, WMV, HEVC, VP9, AV1 and FLAC all play without you touching the system codec setup at all.

This matters most for HEVC and H.265 video. Windows only decodes it for free if the HEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer package came preinstalled on your PC, and the retail HEVC Video Extension in the Microsoft Store is a paid item.

VLC decodes HEVC for free either way, 4K included, and hardware acceleration hands the work to your GPU so a modest laptop can still keep up. AV1 and VP9, the codecs behind YouTube and most modern streaming, need no extra installs either.

If you are not sure what is inside the file, the Codec Finder names the video and audio codecs in seconds. The browser-based HEVC Player will tell you whether HEVC is the sticking point before you install anything at all.

What VLC Does Beyond Playback

VLC is not only a player. It converts files between formats, streams over a local network or the internet, records your desktop, applies real-time video and audio filters, and plays DVDs and Blu-ray discs.

VLC can also pull the audio out of a video or save a stream straight to disk, which pairs neatly with yt-dlp if you already use it for downloading.

Which Build Should You Download

This page carries several builds because VideoLAN publishes stable releases and nightly test builds side by side. For almost everyone, 3.0.23 stable is the right answer.

Take the 64-bit installer unless you know your Windows is 32-bit, and take the ARM64 build only on a Snapdragon or other ARM-based Windows PC.

Platform Coverage

VideoLAN supports the whole Windows range on the 3.0 branch, from Windows XP SP3 up to the current Windows 11, which is unusually generous and makes VLC one of the few current players an old machine can still run.

Mac users have their own build, including a native Apple Silicon version, on the VLC for Mac page.

On phones and tablets, VLC for Android gives you the same no-codecs-needed playback with a touch interface.

What's New in VLC 3.0.23

The headline items are security fixes, including a buffer overflow in PNG handling, an infinite loop in H.264 parsing and several format-overflow issues. If you are running an older 3.0.x build, that alone is reason enough to update.

The rest is housekeeping. The dark palette in the Qt interface behaves properly, codec information now exposes more detail for lossless audio such as 24-bit FLAC, and the release builds cleanly against Qt 6, FFmpeg 8 and taglib 2.0.

Two smaller fixes are worth knowing about. WebVTT subtitles no longer drift out of position, and JPEG files carrying JFIF headers open correctly.

If other software on your PC still refuses those JFIF files, it is quicker to convert JFIF to JPG once than to fight each program separately.

Who Should Look Elsewhere

The tell is what you want to do to the file rather than with it. If you are editing, tuning or bulk-converting, a player is the wrong shape of tool and VLC will feel thin.

If you run HDR content or care about colour accuracy on a calibrated display, VLC is not the strongest option. The usual replacement is a three-part setup:

• MPC-BE as the player itself
• LAV Filters for decoding
• MPC Video Renderer for HDR tone mapping and D3D11 output

If you want codec support everywhere rather than in one player, VLC does nothing for you. Its decoders are private to itself, so Windows Media Player and your editing software stay exactly as broken as they were.

That is the job of the K-Lite Codec Pack, which installs LAV Filters and MPC-HC system-wide and configures them for you.

If it is the interface you dislike rather than the playback, MPC-HC and PotPlayer cover much the same formats with a lighter feel.

mpv player goes further in the other direction, with almost no interface at all. There are another 89 options in the Media Players category if none of those fit.
