Audacity is a free tool for recording and editing audio. With this application, you will be able to add effects to your music, record live, mix sounds, process podcasts and enjoy many other features you will discover on the way.
Although Audacity may seem a too complex tool as you read information about it, this audio processing tool is a lot easier to use than you imagine due to its clean and intuitive format.

The “Help” file will definitely come in handy when it comes to getting around this software.

There is also a portable version of this program (it doesn’t require installation).

The formats supported by Audacity are MP3, AIFF, WAV, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC and AU, for both input and output.

There is a long list of effects that Audacity can add to your audio files, from editing using Copy, Cut and Paste, with unlimited Undo, to mixing tracks together and to adjusting noise processing, bass, equalization, high and low pass filters, echo, phaser filters and so on. It also has echo, change tempo and noise removal effects. You can expand the capabilities of Audacity, since it supports plugins.

A more advanced tool is the audio analysis. Audacity has a built-in amplitude envelope editor, a customizable spectrogram mode and a frequency analysis window. You can analyze frequencies by using spectrogram views.

Recording is one of the most important features of Audacity, and the application can record multiple channels at the same time, from various sources, such as microphones, Firewire devices or USB.

Apart from its manifold features, Audacity also impresses through reliability and fast processing speed. It works impeccably and error-free. It is user-friendly, so it is a good idea starting with this one if you want to learn more about audio processing.
