AMD Radeon Adrenalin Graphics Drivers 26.8.1

AMD Radeon Adrenalin is the driver package for Radeon graphics cards, and installing it is what turns a card in a slot into a working graphics card.

It is free, it comes from AMD, and its full name is AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.

It runs on 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11, and the current release is 26.8.1.

What Is Actually In The Package

Three things arrive in one installer: the display driver itself, a control panel, and the media engine. The control panel is where performance tuning, per-game profiles and the in-game overlay for frame rate, temperature and usage live.

That media engine is why a graphics driver belongs in a codecs category at all. Your GPU is what decodes HEVC and AV1 video in a browser without pinning the processor, and what encodes gameplay captures without dropping frames - and none of that works until this driver is installed.

What Your GPU Can Decode and Encode

Hardware support depends on the card rather than the driver, so a newer Adrenalin release cannot add an encoder your silicon does not have. Roughly, on the Radeon side:

Recording Gameplay

The recording tools built into Adrenalin capture straight to disk using the GPU's own encoder, so the performance cost is small. You pick the codec in the recording settings: H.264 for something that opens anywhere, HEVC for smaller files at the same quality, AV1 for the smallest files if your card can do it.

The trade-off is compatibility rather than quality. AV1 and HEVC captures are the ones that turn up later refusing to import into an older editor, or playing with the audio drifting out of sync - and if that happens, re-recording in H.264 is the fastest way to rule the codec out.

Playing Back and Re-encoding Captures

A capture that will not play in Windows Photos or the Films app is usually missing a system decoder rather than being broken. The HEVC Video Extension restores H.265 playback in Windows applications, and the AV1 Video Extension does the same for AV1.

Neither of those has anything to do with recording - they are decoders for playback, and the GPU handles the encoding side on its own. If you would rather skip system extensions altogether, VLC Media Player carries its own decoders and plays these files without installing anything else.

For turning a large capture into something shareable, HandBrake is the straightforward option and ShanaEncoder handles batches of them.

Anyone who wants control over the output rather than a preset will get further with StaxRip, which drives the software encoders directly.

Those encoders - x264 for H.264 and x265 for HEVC - are much slower than the GPU and noticeably better per megabyte, which is the trade you want for anything you are keeping.

Streaming With OBS

Adrenalin's own recorder is built for convenience, not for scene composition. Once you need overlays, several sources, an audio mixer and a direct connection to Twitch or YouTube, OBS Studio is the tool, and it uses the same GPU encoder underneath.

In the OBS encoder dropdown, that hardware appears as AMF - AMD's Advanced Media Framework, driving the VCN engine on the card. Older documentation calls it VCE, which was the name before RDNA; if a guide tells you to select VCE and you cannot find it, AMF is what you are looking for.

Performance Tuning, Sharpening and Upscaling

The tuning page covers automatic overclocking, manual clock and voltage control, fan curves and per-game profiles, with an undervolting option that is often the more useful direction to go.

Alongside it sit the image features: Radeon Image Sharpening, driver-level upscaling that works in games with no built-in support, and frame generation. Which of them you get depends on your card, and the Adrenalin interface simply greys out anything your hardware cannot do - so the honest answer to "do I have it" is to open the panel and look.

Which Driver You Need

This is the thing most likely to waste your afternoon, because AMD now ships two separate driver lines and the installer will not rescue you from picking the wrong one.

The Polaris and Vega split is recent, so older advice still describes one combined package. If you own an RX 580, this is not your download.

AMD Link Has Been Removed

Before You Install

A driver update is one of the few things on a PC that genuinely benefits from being done cleanly. Adrenalin's installer offers a factory reset option that removes the previous driver first, and it is worth using if you have been updating over the top for a year or more.

It is also worth reading AMD's release notes for the version you are installing, since they list known issues per game and per card generation, and a driver that breaks the one game you actually play is better discovered before the download than after. AMD's Bug Report Tool is the route for reporting anything you hit.
