What NEF Codec Does
NEF Codec (formerly Nikon RAW Codec) is Nikon's official Windows plugin that integrates directly with the Windows Imaging Component.
Once installed, your .NEF files show proper thumbnails in File Explorer and open natively in Microsoft Photos and Windows Live Photo Gallery - no conversion, no third-party software in the way.
Metadata, EXIF data, and image details are all readable right from the shell.
Version 1.31.4 resolves a critical bug that prevented files from being restored from the Recycle Bin after codec installation, and brings improved thumbnail generation speed across Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Supported Cameras
NEF Codec covers Nikon's full lineup across multiple generations - professional DSLRs from the D1 through D6, full-frame bodies including the D850, D810, D750 and D780, DX-format cameras from the D3000 series through the D7500, and mirrorless Z-series bodies including the Z 5, Z 6II, and Z 7II.
COOLPIX compact cameras with RAW capability are also supported.
For Nikon's newer .NRW format used in COOLPIX models, install NRW Codec alongside this package. For a complete Nikon post-processing workflow, Nikon NX Studio is the official editing and organizing suite.
Windows 10 and 11 Users - A Better Option Exists
If you're on Windows 10 version 1903 or later, Microsoft's Raw Image Extension handles NEF files alongside 100+ other RAW formats from Canon, Sony, Fujifilm, and Panasonic - all in one install.
