TAudioConverter 0.9.9

Free

No longer developed

TAudioConverter is no longer updated by its developer - the last version here is from 2015. It may still run, but it gets no fixes for newer Windows versions or formats.

Maintained alternatives that may do the same job:

TAudioConverter is a free, open-source Windows audio converter that also pulls the soundtrack out of video files.

Its developer, who publishes as ozok, released the last version, 0.9.9, in June 2015, and nothing has followed since.

It still runs for many people, but fre:ac and foobar2000 now do the same job with current encoders and active fixes.

What TAudioConverter Actually Does

You drop in music or video files, pick an output format, and it converts them in batches. It runs several encoders at once, one per CPU core, so a big folder finishes faster than with one-at-a-time tools.

Output covers MP3, AAC (including HE-AAC), Opus, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, ALAC, Monkey's Audio, WavPack, TAK, TTA, AC3, DTS, WMA, Musepack, AIFF and WAV. It can also copy the audio track out of a video without re-encoding, and lets you choose which track when a file carries several.

Other handy extras include tag editing, CD ripping and a right-click shell entry. The 0.9.9 release added Monkey's Audio presets and refreshed its bundled FFmpeg, WavPack and Vorbis encoders.

Which File to Pick

The download page carries four files: an installer and a portable build, each in 32-bit and 64-bit. The portable build runs from any folder or USB stick without touching the registry.

If you are unsure which Windows you have, the 32-bit installer runs on both. Pick 64-bit only if you know your system is 64-bit.

Who Can Still Use It

It makes sense if you already know its presets, or you run an older PC and want one tool that converts and extracts in a single pass. Its encoders are frozen at their 2015 versions, which is fine for everyday MP3 or FLAC work.

The tell that it is the wrong tool is a file it refuses to open. One reviewer reports a "This is not a valid file" error on Opus input, and a current converter is the fix there.

What to Use Instead

  • fre:ac is the closest modern match, a free, open-source batch converter and CD ripper that is still updated in 2026.
  • foobar2000 is a player with a built-in Converter. Add the foobar2000 Free Encoder Pack and it writes MP3, AAC, Opus, FLAC and more.
  • LameXP is a multi-format encoder front-end with batch processing, if you liked TAudioConverter's queue-style workflow.

For a quick one-off job you can skip installing anything. The free online audio converter turns files into MP3, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC or WAV right in your browser, with no upload.

To pull the soundtrack out of an MP4 or MKV, the browser audio extractor copies the track without re-encoding. For ripping CDs with error checking, Exact Audio Copy is the specialist tool.

If you are choosing a format, the Opus Audio Codec gives the best quality at small sizes, while FLAC keeps every bit of the original.

More maintained converters sit in the Audio Encoders category.

Quick questions

Is TAudioConverter still being developed?

No. Version 0.9.9 from June 2015 is the last release, so it gets no bug fixes or encoder updates.

Is TAudioConverter free?

Yes. It is free and open source, with no paid tier and no bundled extras.

Can it extract audio from a video?

Yes. It can copy the audio track out of a video unchanged or convert it to another format as it goes.

Installer or portable version?

Both do the same job. The portable build needs no installation and leaves the registry alone, which suits a USB stick or a shared PC.

What is the best free replacement?

fre:ac is the nearest like-for-like swap. foobar2000 is the better pick if you also want a music player.
