ChatGPT is OpenAI's official Android app, putting the same assistant people use on the web on your phone with voice chat and camera input added, free to use for everyday questions and with an optional Plus subscription on top.

The app is free, the free tier is enough for most people, and you can be signed in and asking things in under a minute.
What ChatGPT Actually Does
It writes and it explains. Draft an email, turn a confusing paragraph into plain words, summarise something long, get help with homework, translate between languages, or write and debug code.
It also listens and looks. Voice chat lets you talk instead of typing and hear the reply out loud, and the camera lets you point at a handwritten note, a landmark or a maths problem and ask about it.
What You Get in the App

It needs a connection. Every answer is processed on OpenAI's servers, so there is no offline mode at all - lose signal and the app cannot reply until you are back online. Normal for an assistant, but the opposite of how a downloaded file or a media player behaves.
Free or Plus
The free tier covers everyday use comfortably, and most people never hit its edges. You do not need a card to start and you are not funnelled into a trial.
Plus is OpenAI's paid tier, and what it buys is headroom: higher message limits, access to the newest models first, and priority when demand is high. Exact limits shift every few weeks, so treat any figure you read anywhere, here included, as a snapshot rather than a spec.
App or Website
The website works perfectly well. The app opens faster, sends push notifications, and handles voice and camera far more smoothly than a browser tab manages.
If you mostly work on a laptop, one correction worth having: OpenAI's separate browser experiment is over. The retired ChatGPT Atlas browser stopped working on 9 August 2026, and its browsing features were folded into the ChatGPT desktop app instead.
If a browser with an assistant built into the page is the thing you actually want, Comet Browser is the maintained option, built by Perplexity.
System Requirements
Current builds need Android 12L (12.1) or newer, which is a step above plain Android 12 - a phone on 12.0 will refuse the install rather than run it badly.
Budget roughly 120MB of free space plus a little headroom, and expect to need a working connection for every feature. APK Checker reads the exact requirement out of the file if you would rather confirm than assume.
How It Compares to the Other AI Apps
ChatGPT is the sensible default and the most well-rounded of them. The others are not worse so much as narrower, and one of them may be a better match for what you do.

DeepSeek deserves its own footnote rather than a shrug: it is genuinely capable and genuinely free, and it stores data on servers in China, which several governments have acted on. Our piece on what that actually means for your data lays out the trade-off without the hysteria.

Installing It
- Tap the download button and let the file finish.
- Open it, and allow installs from your browser or file manager if Android asks.
- Sign in with a Google or Apple account, and the free tier is ready straight away.
The file here is the official OpenAI build, checked before it goes up. If you want to verify any installer yourself, APK Checker inspects the contents and permissions in your browser with nothing to install, and it is a good habit for anything sideloaded.
Two things go wrong often enough to be worth naming. A sideloaded app that opens to a 'Get This App From Play Store' error is hitting Play licensing rather than a bad download, and Play Store Check will tell you in advance whether a file expects the store to be there.

Is this the official app?

Does it work offline?

Will it run on my phone?
If it is on Android 12L or newer, yes. Android 12.0 is not enough, which catches people out because the difference is a minor version.
ChatGPT or Perplexity?

What happened to ChatGPT Atlas?
OpenAI retired it on 9 August 2026 and moved its browsing features into the ChatGPT desktop app. It is not a separate download to chase any more.
