The official ChatGPT app from OpenAI puts its AI assistant on your Android phone, free to download and free to start using.
It's the same assistant millions use on the web, built for a smaller screen, with voice chat and camera input added on top.

What ChatGPT Actually Does - in Plain Terms
You type a question or task, and ChatGPT writes back an answer in seconds.
That's the whole thing, and it covers a lot of ground: it can draft an email or a message, explain something confusing in simpler words, summarise a long block of text, help with homework, translate between languages, or write code.
You can also talk to it out loud with voice chat and get spoken replies back, or point your camera at something - a handwritten note, a landmark, a maths problem - and ask about it.
The free tier handles everyday use comfortably.
If you lean on it heavily all day, OpenAI sells a ChatGPT Plus subscription that gives faster replies and priority access when servers are busy, but you don't need it to get started.

Why Grab the App Instead of the Website
The website works fine, but the native app is faster to open, sends you push notifications, and handles voice conversations and camera input more smoothly than a browser tab. You also skip typing a URL every time - it's one tap from your home screen.
If you mostly use ChatGPT on a laptop, note that OpenAI also builds ChatGPT Atlas, its own macOS web browser with ChatGPT built into the sidebar - that's a browser, not a different or "smarter" model, and it's a separate download for Mac users.

How ChatGPT Compares to Other AI Apps
ChatGPT is the default pick for most people, and for good reason - it's well-rounded and easy to use. But the Android AI space has grown, and depending on what you want, another app might fit better.
If you want live, up-to-the-minute answers pulled from X and the open web, Grok from xAI is built around that. For research with clickable source citations on every answer, Perplexity is the specialist.
If you'd rather not commit to one model, Poe puts ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and others behind a single login, and Microsoft Copilot ties GPT-powered chat into Word, Excel and the rest of Microsoft 365.
