Free Video Cutter Joiner is DVDVideoMedia's small Windows tool for trimming a clip between two points and merging several clips into one, saving to AVI, MPEG, MOV, MP4 or FLV, and every feature is free with no watermark or paid tier.

Cutting thirty seconds off the front of a clip should not require a project file, a login, or a timeline you have to learn first.

Free Video Cutter Joiner is a small Windows program from DVDVideoMedia that does two jobs: it trims a video between a start point and an end point, and it glues several clips into one file.

Everything in it is free, with no trial timer, no watermark, and no paid version waiting behind a greyed-out button.

What It Actually Does

You load a file, drag two sliders to mark the part you want to keep, and save it. The joining side works the same way in reverse: add clips in the order you want them, then export one file.

That is the whole program, and the narrow scope is the point. There are no titles, no transitions, no colour tools and no audio mixing, so nothing stands between you and the cut.

If you want the audio side as well, the developer also ships a combined audio and video edition, and the same interface ideas apply to both.

The Formats It Reads and Writes

Output goes to AVI, MPEG, MOV, MP4 or FLV, which covers most of what phones, cameras and screen recorders hand you.

MKV and WebM are not on that list, and that is the first thing to check. If your file ends in .mkv, use MKVToolNix instead, which splits and merges Matroska files without re-encoding the video at all.

Not sure what you are holding? MediaInfo reads the container, codec, resolution and frame rate off any video file and shows them in one window.

What the Speed and Quality Claims Really Mean

DVDVideoMedia says the tool can cut a 1GB HD video in around ten seconds and merge clips with no loss of quality. That best case applies when the output format matches what went in, because the video is copied across rather than rebuilt.

Ask for a different output format and the program has to re-encode, which takes longer and puts the picture through a second round of compression. On a short clip you will not see it; on something already heavily compressed, you might.

When an untouched copy matters more than convenience, LosslessCut is built around that single promise, cutting on keyframes so the original stream passes straight through.

Joining Clips That Do Not Match

Merging is simple when the clips came off the same camera at the same settings. It gets awkward when they did not, because two files with different resolutions or frame rates cannot just be laid end to end.

Stretched picture, audio that drifts out of sync partway through, or a black stretch in the middle of a joined file usually trace back to mismatched sources rather than to a bug.

Converting the odd clip out so it matches the others first, with HandBrake or XMedia Recode, fixes it far more reliably than joining again and hoping.

Checking the Result Before You Delete Anything

Play the exported file all the way through before you throw the source away, especially after a join. Skipping to the end is not enough, because the seam is in the middle.

VLC and MPC-BE both carry their own decoders, so a file that plays there but not in the Windows player is fine and the player is the problem.

If nothing on the machine will open it, installing K-Lite Codec Pack normally fills whatever gap is left.

Which Windows Versions It Runs On

DVDVideoMedia lists Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, and the installer is a plain setup wizard with nothing unusual in it.

There is no macOS or Linux build. LosslessCut and Avidemux both run on Windows, macOS and Linux, so they are the sensible pick if you move between machines.

Avidemux is also the natural step up on Windows: still one window and no project files, but with filters, encoder settings and frame-accurate navigation when a plain trim is not enough.

Who Should Look Elsewhere

The tell is what you are about to ask the software for. If the answer involves titles, transitions, more than one video track, or fading music under a voice, this tool has no menu for it and never will.

For that kind of work, Shotcut and Kdenlive are free and about as approachable as real editors get.

DaVinci Resolve goes much further again, though it expects a capable machine and a weekend of learning.

Editing on a phone instead is a different job with different tools: CapCut and YouCut both handle trimming and joining on Android without a desktop in the loop.

If the file you want to cut is music rather than video, mp3DirectCut trims MP3s without re-encoding them, and Audacity covers anything more involved.

Two closer alternatives are worth knowing about as well: Simple Video Cutter is an open-source tool with the same single-purpose brief, and AVI Trimmer is smaller still if everything you touch is AVI.

Quick questions

Is it really free, or is there a paid version?

It is freeware with every feature available, no trial period and no watermark on the output. Free here means free of charge rather than open source, since the source code is not published.

Does it work on Windows 11?

Yes. The developer lists Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, and there is no separate build to pick between.

Does cutting reduce the quality of the video?

Keeping the same output format as the source is the fast, faithful path. Choosing a different output format means the video is re-encoded, so a heavily compressed clip can lose a little more detail.

Can it open MKV files?

No, MKV is not among the formats it handles. Use MKVToolNix for Matroska files, or convert the file first.

Is there a Mac version?

Not of this program. LosslessCut and Avidemux both have macOS builds and do the same job.

Can I pull just the audio out of a video with it?

That is outside what it does, but the site's audio extractor does it in a browser tab with no install.
