InShot is InShot Inc.'s free Android video editor for TikTok, Reels and YouTube Shorts, offering full timeline editing, royalty-free music and text overlays at no cost, with a watermark on every export until you pay for Pro.

InShot is the video editor behind a very large share of the clips on TikTok, Reels and YouTube Shorts.

It gives you a full editing timeline for nothing, which is more than most free mobile editors manage.

It also stamps a watermark on every video you export until you pay, and that single fact decides whether this app is right for you.

What You Get Without Paying

The free tier is not a demo. You get the real editor: trim, split, merge and rearrange clips on a proper timeline, with no cap on project length or clip count.

There is a built-in library of royalty-free music and sound effects, so you can score a video without a copyright claim landing on it later. Voiceover recording is there too, for narration or commentary over the top.

Text overlays, stickers and emojis handle the captions, and a set of filters and adjustment tools covers the look. Speed controls give you slow motion and time-lapse from the same clip.

The aspect ratio tools are the reason a lot of people stay. You can switch one project between 9:16 for TikTok and Reels, 1:1 for an Instagram feed post and 16:9 for YouTube, with a background blur filling the bars instead of leaving black edges.

Free Versus Pro, Line by Line

Most of the editor is in the free tier. What Pro buys you is the absence of things rather than a pile of new tools.

What you get Free Pro
Watermark on exports On every export Removed
Timeline editing - trim, split, merge, rearrange Full Full
Music library, sound effects and voiceovers Included Included
Text, stickers, aspect ratios and speed controls Included Included
Filters and effects Standard set Premium packs added
Export quality HD Higher resolution and bitrate
Adverts in the app Yes None

So the honest summary is that the watermark is the product. If your videos go to a personal feed and nobody is paying you for them, the free tier is genuinely enough.

If you post branded content, run a creator account or hand work to a client, the watermark stops being cosmetic. That is the point where people either pay or move to something else.

Which Download to Pick

Three files are offered here, and they are not interchangeable. Check your Android version first, in Settings under About phone.

File Needs Take this one if
InShot 2.222.1548 nodpi, .apk Android 8.0 or newer You want the current version and a file you can simply tap to install - this is the right choice for almost everyone
InShot 2.222.1548, .xapk Android 8.0 or newer You already use an installer app that handles XAPK bundles - tapping this file on its own will not install anything
InShot 2.219.1545 nodpi, .apk Android 7.0 or newer Your phone is on Android 7 and the current build refuses to install

The nodpi builds carry graphics for every screen density in one file, which makes them slightly larger and means they work on any phone. The XAPK is the split-bundle version stores use to send a smaller download tailored to your device.

If you are not sure the app will run on your phone. Our Play Store Check tells you whether an APK needs Google Play services to work, and the APK Checker reads the package details straight out of the file before you install it.

Free Editors That Do Not Watermark

Before paying for Pro, it is worth knowing that three good editors export clean without asking for anything.

YouCut is made by InShot Inc. themselves and exports with no watermark on the free tier, with no Pro version to buy. The feature set is slimmer, but it covers trimming, transitions and text, which is most short-form work.

CapCut for Android is the closest direct competitor, with AI auto-captions, background removal and TikTok-native templates on the free tier. It is the better pick if you lean on the AI tools or publish mainly to TikTok.

VN Video Editor goes further than either on the technical side, with keyframe animation, a multi-track timeline and chroma key - all free, and all things other apps put behind a subscription.

What InShot keeps is polish. The interface is smoother, the photo editing goes deeper, and it is easier to learn than VN - so the choice comes down to whether that is worth a watermark or a payment to you.

Companion Apps Worth Having

The same developer makes a screen recorder that pairs with it. XRecorder captures at up to 1080p and 60fps with optional internal audio, which is what you want for tutorials, gameplay or app demos you plan to cut in InShot afterwards.

For stills alongside the video, Hypic handles AI retouching, background removal and art generation. Adobe Lightroom for Android is the option to look at instead if you shoot raw and want real colour control.

If you want better footage going in, Blackmagic Camera gives you manual exposure, focus and LOG recording on supported phones, and InShot reads the resulting clips without any conversion step.

For reference clips or stock footage to cut against, 4K Video Downloader for Android saves videos to the device so you can edit them offline.

Check the Export Before You Upload

It is worth watching the finished file in a proper player before it goes out, because an export that looks right in the editor preview can still come out with the wrong aspect ratio or a stripped audio track.

VLC for Android plays anything InShot can produce and shows you the real file rather than a preview of it. MX Player does the same job with gesture controls if you prefer it.

Installing the APK

Android blocks app installs from outside the Play Store until you allow them, and it asks per app rather than once for the whole phone. The permission you need belongs to whichever browser or file manager you download with.

  1. Open Settings, then Apps, then Special app access, and choose Install unknown apps.
  2. Find your browser or file manager in the list and turn the permission on for it.
  3. Tap the downloaded .apk file and confirm the install - Android remembers the permission for future updates.

The exact menu path moves around between Android versions and manufacturer skins. If Special app access is not where this says, search Settings for "unknown apps" and it will find it.

Avoid anything advertising itself as a mod. Builds promising Pro features unlocked for free have been repackaged by somebody other than the developer, which is exactly how malware reaches Android phones - the files here are the official unmodified InShot Inc. releases, and the APK Checker above will confirm that for you.

Who Should Look Elsewhere

The tell is what happens to your videos after you export them. If anyone other than your friends is going to see them, budget for Pro or pick a watermark-free editor now rather than after you have built a workflow on this one.

Anyone on Android 7 should also treat this as a stopgap. The 2.219 build still installs, but it is a version behind and it will not keep receiving updates.

And if you edit mainly on a desktop and only finish on the phone, a mobile-first editor is the wrong shape for you - the projects do not move between devices.

Quick questions

Is InShot free?

The editor is genuinely free with no time limit, but every video you export carries an InShot watermark and the app shows adverts. Pro removes both.

Can I remove the watermark without paying?

Not in InShot. If a clean export matters and you would rather not pay, YouCut from the same developer exports without one for free.

Which file should I download?

The 2.222.1548 nodpi .apk, unless your phone is on Android 7, in which case take the 2.219.1545 build. Skip the .xapk unless you already have an installer app that handles bundles.

What Android version do I need?

Android 8.0 or newer for the current release. Check yours in Settings under About phone.

Is the APK here safe?

These are the official unmodified builds from InShot Inc. rather than repackaged ones, and you can read the package details yourself with our APK Checker before installing.

Does it need Google Play services?

The editor works without them, though the store-linked parts of the app will not. Our Play Store Check confirms it against the file you are about to install.

More editors, players and tools are in the rest of the Android section.
