MythTV DirectShow Filters allow you to play MythTV NUV files on Windows.
This package does not include a MPEG4 codec, so if you need one, you will have to get it separately (for instance, the MPEG4 codec from 3ivx or from divx.com).

NUV files are of two types: nupplevideo format, which can be read by DSMyth filters and which is used when you choose mpeg4 or rtjpeg as video codec in MythTV, and the NUV format.

The latter appears when you have a card that can do hardware mpeg encoding or a dvb card. The NUV file is an MPEG file with the extension NUV instead of MPG. For this format you will also need MPEG2 filters.

If you only install MythTV DirectShow Filters on your computer and you don’t use an MPEG2 filter as well, you will be able to play most MPEG files, but the file information property page will not work. Moreover, Dimension and Duration extra columns in Windows Explorer will not work either.

The last release of the MythTV DirectShow Filters was 2006-10-15 and its features were: updated filters for MythTV 0.20, libdvbpsi updated, changed all db access to use MySQL++ and not allowing users to delete a property page that is in use.

The developers of MythTV DirectShow Filters also offer information about the potential problems of this application (possible errors when switching live TV entries from a media player, deadlock, MPEG2 TS Seeking not implemented, changes during playback to audio and video types in MPEG2 TS streams not being handled etc.)

MythTV DirectShow Filters is not dedicated to a large category of users and, since it has not been developed for a long time, it is outdated. It can still be necessary if you want to play MythTV NUV files, though.
