Nero Start is Nero's free launcher for Windows 10 and 11, listing the whole Nero catalogue in one window so you can install WaveEditor, SoundTrax, CoverDesigner and Score at no cost, with everything else a trial or a paid upgrade.

Nero Start is a launcher, not a program that edits anything itself.

It shows Nero's whole catalogue in one window and installs whichever pieces you ask for.

Four of those pieces cost nothing at all, and everything else is a trial or a paid upgrade.

What Nero Start Actually Does

The download is a 193.7MB installer that puts a dashboard on your desktop. From there you browse Nero's products, install the ones you want, watch which trials are still running and pick up updates.

Nothing in the dashboard burns a disc or trims a clip on its own. Every one of those jobs belongs to a separate application that Nero Start fetches on demand, so budget for the hub plus whatever it downloads afterwards.

Worth knowing before you install. Nero Start asks you to register an email address and collect a password before the free tools unlock, so this is not a download-and-go installer.

The Four Tools That Are Genuinely Free

These four carry no cost and no time limit, and they are full versions rather than crippled demos. They are the honest reason to install the hub.

Tool What it does Worth it if
Nero WaveEditor Single-file audio editing with noise reduction, reverb, equalisation, pitch shifting and a spectrum analyser You want a plain waveform editor and do not need plugins
Nero SoundTrax Multi-track mixing on a timeline for compilations, podcasts and simple music projects You are arranging several clips rather than editing one file
Nero CoverDesigner Printable labels and case inserts for CD, DVD and Blu-ray cases, with templates You still burn discs and want proper packaging - almost nothing free does this
Nero Score Benchmarks your CPU and GPU on encoding and transcoding workloads You are checking whether a machine can cope with video work

CoverDesigner is the one most worth the trip. Disc label and insert design is a gap almost no free software fills, and our guide Is Nero Still Worth It? Free Tools vs Better Alternatives walks through picking the free tools out of the catalogue.

What Costs Money

Nero Burning ROM is the name most people came for, and it is paid software with a trial period. The hub will install it happily, but the disc verification and SecurDisc encryption sit behind a licence.

Video editing is Nero Video, also paid, and also not part of the hub itself. Backup, media management and the AI upscaling and photo restoration features Nero advertises all belong to the Platinum suite.

The free player is the exception. Nero Media Player handles 4K with hardware acceleration and is now freeware, though it is a small download you can grab on its own without the hub.

What Else the Installer Puts on Your PC

The hub does not arrive alone. Unpacking the installer shows five more Nero components that go on silently, with no prompt and no shortcuts: Nero Info, Nero KnowHow PLUS, a licensing module, an audio codec pack and a shared video codec pack.

It also installs the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 runtime, and pulls down Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2 from Nero's servers if your machine does not already have it. That second one is roughly another 70MB.

A desktop shortcut named Nero Market is created too, pointing at Nero's online store rather than at anything on your computer, and the licensing component ships a file called SpecialOffer.exe. None of that is malware and the installer is correctly signed by Nero AG, but it does tell you what the free tier is there to do.

Editing Audio Without Nero

WaveEditor is competent and easy to learn, but it is a 348MB install for one editor. If you are not already committed to Nero, the free alternatives are stronger.

  • Audacity does everything WaveEditor and SoundTrax do between them, adds a large plugin ecosystem, and is actively developed.
  • mp3DirectCut trims MP3 files without re-encoding them, which no general editor does as cleanly.
  • LameXP handles batch conversion and bundles the LAME MP3 Encoder most other tools rely on.

For a one-off conversion you can skip the install entirely and use our free online audio converter in the browser.

Burning Discs Without Nero

Nero built its name on burning, and Burning ROM is still good. It is also the one part of this ecosystem with the most free competition, because burning software stopped changing years ago.

Free burner Strength Use this when
ImgBurn The most granular control over ISO writing and disc verification You know what layer break and write speed mean, and you decline every bundled offer during setup
CDBurnerXP Familiar drag-and-drop layout with Blu-ray support You want something that looks and behaves like old Nero
BurnAware The cleanest interface of the four, still updated in 2026 Someone else has to use the machine and you want no surprises
AnyBurn Tiny installer that still covers images, audio discs and erasing You want burning on a laptop without another large install

Windows can also mount and burn ISO files on its own, with no extra software at all. For a single disc that is often the whole answer.

Converting and Encoding Video Without Nero

Since Nero Start ships no editor and Nero Video is paid, this is where most people end up looking anyway.

HandBrake is the default recommendation for converting and compressing video, and it is free, open source and updated regularly. MKVToolNix covers the other common job, which is rearranging tracks, subtitles and chapters inside an MKV without re-encoding anything.

StaxRip goes further for anyone who wants filter chains and per-encoder tuning, at the cost of a much steeper start. Our guide Video Encoding Wars: StaxRip vs HandBrake lays the two side by side.

Playing the Files Afterwards

Nero Media Player is fine, but the standalone players are better and none of them ask you to register anything.

VLC Media Player opens practically any file without installing codecs first, which makes it the safe default.

MPC-HC is lighter and endlessly configurable, and MPC-BE bundles LAV Filters for newer codecs including AV1.

If you would rather fix playback system-wide than switch player, the K-Lite Codec Pack adds modern decoders to Windows Media Player and other DirectShow applications in one go. To choose between the two Media Player Classic forks, read MPC-BE vs MPC-HC: Which Media Player is Right for You?.

System Requirements

Nero Start runs on Windows 10, 32-bit or 64-bit, and on Windows 11. There is no Mac or Linux build.

The installer is 193.7MB, and each tool you add through the hub takes its own space on top, some of it considerable. You need an internet connection to install anything, but not to run the tools afterwards.

Who Should Look Elsewhere

The tell is simple. If you can name the one thing you want to do, you do not want a hub.

Someone who only needs to burn an ISO, or only needs to cut the silence off an MP3, is installing 193.7MB of storefront to reach a single tool that is smaller than the storefront. Go straight to the standalone download instead.

The hub earns its place when you want several Nero tools, want them updated together, or specifically want CoverDesigner. If the free alternatives above already cover your work, there is nothing here you are missing.

Quick questions

Is Nero Start free?

Yes, the hub itself costs nothing, and four of the applications it installs are free with no time limit: WaveEditor, SoundTrax, CoverDesigner and Score. Most of the rest of the catalogue is a trial or a paid product.

Do I need a Nero account?

Yes. Nero Start asks for an email address and sends back a password, and the free tools unlock after that. There is no way to skip it and still use the hub.

Does Nero Start include a video editor?

No. Nero Start installs and launches other applications but edits nothing itself, and Nero's video editor is a separate paid product. For free video work, use HandBrake or MKVToolNix instead.

Can I install the free tools without Nero Start?

Yes, Nero WaveEditor and Nero SoundTrax have their own installers. Be aware that each of those is a bigger download than the hub, so this saves you the dashboard rather than the disk space.

Why is a launcher nearly 200MB?

Nero Start is built on Electron, so it ships an entire Chromium browser engine to draw its own window - the launcher executable alone is 175MB before anything else. The rest is the codec, licensing and helper components that install alongside it.

Does it work on Windows 11?

Yes, Nero Start supports Windows 11 and Windows 10 in both 32-bit and 64-bit form. It updates itself on launch, so the installed build usually moves ahead of the installer you downloaded.
