WhatsApp Messenger is Meta's free messaging app for Android, carrying end-to-end encrypted chats, voice and video calls on your existing phone number, with this APK offered for reinstalls and new phones rather than the Play Store.

WhatsApp runs on your existing phone number, costs nothing, and encrypts every personal chat and call end to end by default.

This page carries the plain APK, which is what you want when you are reinstalling, setting up a new phone, or working without the Play Store.

One thing to check before you install anything, because it changes in the first week of September 2026.

Check Your Android Version First

Android 5.0 and 5.1 stop working on 8 September 2026. WhatsApp is raising its minimum to Android 6.0 (Marshmallow), and phones below that will not be able to send or receive messages at all after that date, whatever version of the app is installed.

You can check in Settings, under About phone, where the Android version is listed. Anything from 6.0 upwards is fine and will stay fine.

If your phone is on 5.0 or 5.1 and cannot be updated, no APK will help - the cutoff is enforced by WhatsApp's servers rather than by the app. The honest answer in that situation is that the handset has reached the end of its useful life for messaging.

iPhone users are not affected by this change, and WhatsApp's own Android page is the place to confirm the current floor if you are reading this well after publication.

Installing the APK Safely

Because this is a direct APK rather than a Play Store install, Android will ask permission the first time you open the file. The prompt names the app you downloaded it with, usually your browser, and asks whether it may install unknown apps.

Allow it for that one app, install WhatsApp, then turn the permission back off. Leaving it on permanently is the actual risk, not the sideload itself.

If you want to see inside the file before you open it, the APK Checker lists an APK's contents, signing details and the permissions it asks for, in your browser with nothing to install.

The companion Play Store Check answers the other sideloading question, which is whether an app needs Google Play services to run at all. WhatsApp will install and message without them, though push notifications get less reliable.

If a download stalls partway, that is usually the browser rather than the file, so try a different browser before assuming the APK is broken.

Which of the Two Files to Take

The main link is the stable release and it is the one almost everyone wants. It is a universal build covering arm64-v8a, armeabi-v7a, x86 and x86_64, so you do not need to know which chip your phone uses.

The second link is a beta build, which exists so people can try features before general release. It lags the stable release here, so take it only if you specifically want the beta channel.

What You Get Once It Is Installed

Messages, photos, videos, voice notes and documents travel over your internet connection rather than as paid SMS, so there is no per-message fee and no surcharge for messaging someone in another country.

Voice and video calls work the same way, one to one or as a group of up to 32 people, and the app quietly raises and lowers call quality as your signal moves rather than dropping the call outright.

Group chats hold up to 1,024 participants, with admin controls, @mentions and pinned messages so an announcement does not scroll out of sight in a busy family thread.

Status updates disappear after 24 hours, and you can link the same account to a computer or tablet without keeping your phone awake.

End-to-end encryption covers personal chats and calls by default. In plain terms the contents are scrambled in a way that only your device and the other person's can undo, so your network operator cannot read them and neither can WhatsApp.

Privacy Controls Worth Turning On

Two-step verification is the important one. It puts a PIN on your number so that someone who intercepts a verification SMS still cannot move your account onto their phone, which is how the "hi mum" scam usually starts.

Fingerprint lock keeps the app closed until you unlock it, disappearing messages clear a chat on a timer you set, and view-once photos and videos can be opened a single time.

Usernames arrived in 2026 and are optional. Reserving one lets you share a handle instead of your number with someone new, though a phone number is still required to hold the account, and existing contacts and groups still see your number.

If it matters to you, WhatsApp's own announcement sets out exactly what a username does and does not hide.

None of this covers the rest of your phone's traffic. A VPN such as ProtonVPN for Android handles that side, and the Security Tools section has the rest.

Backups, and the Change That Costs People Money

WhatsApp backs your chats up to Google Drive on a schedule you choose, and that backup is what restores your history when you set up a new phone. Have it ready before you start, because there is no second chance to restore once you are past setup.

Backups now count against your Google storage. Android WhatsApp backups used to sit outside the quota and no longer do, so a chat history full of forwarded video can quietly fill a free 15GB account.

The fix is to exclude videos from the backup, in Settings under Chats and then Chat backup. Text, photos and voice notes are a fraction of the size, and video is almost always what pushed the backup over the line.

Sharing Photos and Video Without Wrecking Them

WhatsApp compresses photos and video hard by default, which saves your data allowance and is fine for a snapshot, less fine for anything you want to keep. There is a higher-quality setting for media that matters.

For a quick tidy-up before something goes out, Hypic Photo Editor covers retouching and background removal, and InShot handles trimming and captions.

For Status videos specifically, CapCut for Android adds transitions and automatic captions, with a clear line between the free tools and the ones that want Pro.

If a video simply will not send, it is usually the format rather than the size, and FFmpeg Media Encoder can re-encode it to plain H.264 on the phone.

For audio files in a format WhatsApp will not accept, the online audio converter does the job in a browser tab with nothing to install.

Playing What People Send You

WhatsApp plays ordinary video and voice notes in the chat, but a forwarded file that came from somewhere else can defeat the phone's built-in player. VLC for Android carries its own decoders and opens almost anything without a codec pack.

For MKV files, or tracks with DTS, AC3 or EAC3 audio that play as silence, MX Player needs the separate MX Player Custom Codec add-on to decode them.

KMPlayer has the same split, and the KMPlayer Custom Codec fills the same gap for it.

Saved voice notes and music files are better served by a dedicated audio player such as AIMP for Android, and BSPlayer for Android fetches subtitles automatically when someone sends a clip in a language you do not read.

To record a call or capture a walkthrough for someone who is stuck, XRecorder captures up to 1080p with optional internal audio.

Quick questions

Will WhatsApp still work on my old phone?

Only if it runs Android 6.0 or newer from 8 September 2026. Android 5.0 and 5.1 devices lose access entirely on that date, and no version of the app gets around it.

Is the APK here the same app as the Play Store version?

Yes, it is the same official build, signed by WhatsApp, just delivered as a file instead of through the store. You can verify the signature yourself with the APK Checker before installing.

Is the file on this page the current version?

The version number in the page heading is the build we are hosting, and the date beside it tells you when it was uploaded. If you download it and the version inside does not match, say so in a review and it gets re-uploaded - that has happened before and it was fixed the same day.

Do I need a Google account or the Play Store?

Not to install or to message. Google Play services make push notifications more reliable and are needed for Google Drive chat backups, so a phone without them will work but will be less convenient.

Will installing this delete my chat history?

Installing over an existing copy keeps everything on the device. If you are wiping the phone or moving to a new one, take a backup first, because the restore prompt only appears during setup.

Do I need a username now?

No, usernames are optional. Your phone number still runs the account, and a username only changes what a new contact has to know in order to reach you.

Browse the rest of the Android APK section for players, editors and the codec add-ons mentioned above.

Download WhatsApp Messenger for Android and see how the install goes, or tell us how you got on if you have used it before.

It's not version 2.25.24.76, it's the previous version that they didn't upload.
