All you need is one free component called 3DYD YouTube Source. It plugs straight into foobar2000 and lets you paste any YouTube URL into a playlist, just like a local file. This guide walks you through the full setup in under 10 minutes.

What You Need Before You Start

You need two things installed: foobar2000 and the 3DYD YouTube Source component. The default foobar2000 installation is fine - no special options required during setup.

If you've never installed a foobar2000 component before, the process is simple. You can also check the Quick Guide for Installing foobar2000 Components if you want a broader overview of how the plugin system works.

Before you begin
Make sure foobar2000 is closed before installing any component. Installing while the player is running can cause the component to fail to register.

Step 1 - Install foobar2000

Download foobar2000 and run the installer. The default options work perfectly for this guide.

foobar2000 is free, lightweight, and runs on Windows, macOS, and Android. The Windows version has the widest component support, which is what we'll be using here.

Step 2 - Download and Install 3DYD YouTube Source

Go to the 3DYD YouTube Source download page and grab the file labeled 3DYD YT Component - for foobar2000 from the download list. You'll get a .fb2k-component file.

Open foobar2000 and go to:

  1. File > Preferences > Components
  2. Click Install... and locate the downloaded .fb2k-component file.
  3. Select the file and click Open
  4. Restart foobar2000 when prompted.

After the restart, the YouTube Source component will appear in your File menu. If it doesn't show up, double-check that you installed the correct version for your foobar2000 release.

Step 3 - Stream a YouTube Video

Copy the URL of any YouTube video you want to stream. In foobar2000, go to File > Youtube Source > Add multiple URLs...

Paste the URL into the text box and click OK. The audio will appear in your playlist and start playing immediately. Only the audio track streams - no video, which keeps bandwidth usage low.

Step 4 - Save YouTube Streams as a Playlist

If you revisit the same streams regularly, save them so you don't have to paste URLs every session. Add all your YouTube URLs to the playlist, then go to File > Save Playlist.

Load it next time from File > Open Playlist and everything picks up exactly where you left it.

Step 5 - Save YouTube Audio as a Local File (Optional)

foobar2000 can save streamed audio directly to your drive. Right-click the stream in your playlist, choose Convert, and follow the prompts.

You can export to MP3, FLAC, AAC, and more - but you'll want the foobar2000 Free Encoder Pack installed first for the best format support. The full conversion workflow is covered in the Audio File Conversion Made Easy with foobar2000 guide.

Step 6 - Fine-Tune Playback (Optional)

Head to File > Preferences > Playback to adjust buffer length, ReplayGain, and output settings. Increasing the buffer size is useful if you experience occasional dropouts on slower connections.

For audio enhancement, go to File > Preferences > DSP Manager to add an equalizer, crossfader, or other effects. You can also enable visualizations from View > Visualizations.

Tip:
The 3DYD component works with standard YouTube watch URLs (youtube.com/watch?v=...) and most playlist URLs. If a URL fails, try the shortened youtu.be format as an alternative.

Quick Troubleshooting

  • Component not visible after install - Make sure foobar2000 was fully closed before installing, then restart it again.
  • URL not playing - The component may need an update if YouTube has changed its API. Check the 3DYD download page for a newer version.
  • Audio cuts out - Go to Preferences > Output and increase the buffer length.
  • No Convert option - Install the foobar2000 Free Encoder Pack to unlock conversion to all major formats.

That's All You Need

foobar2000 with the 3DYD component gives you a clean, distraction-free way to stream YouTube audio with the same sound quality controls you'd use for local files. No browser, no ads, no UI clutter - just music in your queue.

Once the setup is done, adding new streams is as quick as copying a URL. Pair it with a saved playlist and your daily listening routine barely changes.
