    What is a Codec?

    A codec (coder-decoder) is software that compresses and decompresses video/audio data. Without the right codec, your media player can't understand the file format.

    Modern formats like HEVC (H.265) and AV1 provide better quality at smaller file sizes but require newer codecs that Windows doesn't include by default.

    It is a short decision wizard, not a file scanner. You pick the problem you are seeing, the file format involved and your Windows version, and it matches those answers against a small set of tested codec packs and players (K-Lite, VLC, CCCP, MediaInfo, HandBrake) that solve that specific problem. It does not scan your PC or open your files - for that, use the Codec Finder or the GPU & Codec Checker instead.

    Almost always a missing decoder. Windows Media Player and the built-in Movies & TV app only understand a handful of formats out of the box, so a modern file encoded in HEVC (H.265) or AV1 will show a black screen or an error instead of playing. Choosing Video Won't Play in the wizard points you to K-Lite Codec Pack Full, which adds decoders for almost every format, or VLC, which plays most files with no extra install at all.

    This usually means the video decoder is fine but the audio track uses a codec Windows cannot decode, commonly a surround format like DTS or Dolby Digital (AC3/E-AC3) pulled from a ripped disc or a streaming download. K-Lite Codec Pack Full includes the LAV audio decoders that cover these formats; VLC handles most of them natively as well.

    Basic .srt subtitles almost always work. Styled subtitles in ASS or SSA format, common on anime releases, need a proper subtitle renderer to show fonts, colours and positioning correctly. The Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP) is built specifically for this and is the wizard's top pick for subtitle issues; VLC's built-in renderer is a solid fallback that needs no separate install.

    Full is the safe default: it covers virtually every format you will encounter and bundles Media Player Classic, LAV Filters and madVR. Standard drops some of the less common codecs and the extra players but still handles the vast majority of everyday files, and is a lighter install. Basic only includes the most essential codecs and suits an older or low-spec PC where you mainly play common formats like MP4 and MKV with H.264.

    Right-click the file and open it with MediaInfo, which lists the exact video codec, audio codec and container in seconds - no installation of a codec pack required just to check. Our own Codec Finder does the same thing directly in the browser if you would rather not install anything at all.

    Sometimes that is the faster fix, especially for a file with a damaged header or a very obscure codec no current pack supports. HandBrake re-encodes the file to H.264 or H.265 in an MP4 or MKV container, which plays on virtually anything - phones, smart TVs, browsers and every desktop player. VLC can also do a basic conversion if you only need a quick format change.

    It changes how you get HEVC and AV1 support more than it changes what you need. On Windows 10 and 11, Microsoft's own HEVC Video Extensions add H.265 playback to the built-in apps, and AV1 support ships through the free AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store. On Windows 7 and 8.1, neither Store extension is available, so a full codec pack like K-Lite is the only practical route to modern formats on those systems.
