MovieBox, a free app for films, series and live football, has passed 300 million downloads on a single phone app store - and that number is why so many people now ask whether it is safe.

The short answer: popular is not the same as safe, and with MovieBox the biggest risks come from where you get it and what it streams.
We looked at what is actually known about the app, and we will be honest about what we could not check.
Then we will show you how to check an app yourself, and which free legal apps do the same job.
What Is MovieBox?
MovieBox is a free Android app that streams films, TV series and live sports without a subscription. Its store listing promises "free access to sports live streams", naming Europe's five biggest football leagues.
Most of its downloads come from Palm Store, the app store built into Tecno, Infinix and itel phones, which are sold widely in Africa. The counter there passed 300 million in early October, up from about 243 million in June, as TorrentFreak reported.
The name has also been reused by several unrelated apps over the years. So two people talking about "MovieBox" may not mean the same app at all.
Is MovieBox Legal?
This autumn, Hollywood's MPA and French broadcaster Canal+ both reported MovieBox to the European Commission as a large piracy operation. The MPA also lists it in its yearly report to the US government on piracy markets.
Being reported is not a court ruling, and MovieBox did not reply when asked. But film studios and football leagues do not license their content to a free app like this, and in 2025 Nigeria's copyright regulator had its old website, moviebox.ng, suspended.
Is MovieBox Safe? What We Could and Could Not Check
We found no published security test of the MovieBox app itself, so we cannot tell you it contains malware. Nobody who promises it is "100% safe" can know that either.
What we can tell you is where the real risks are:
- Copycat download sites. Search for MovieBox and you will find a dozen websites that each claim to be the official one, any of which can hand you a changed file.
- Pirate apps are a favourite malware route. A June 2026 study for the Asia Video Industry Association found malware in nearly half of the illicit streaming apps it tested, including tools that collect personal data.
- It can vanish overnight. Apps like this get blocked, renamed and moved to new addresses, and every move sends people hunting for a new download.
Watch out for "MovieBox APK" sites:
Most of the top search results for MovieBox safety are run by sites offering the download themselves. A page that says "100% safe" next to a big download button is selling you the file, not checking it.
Already Installed It? Check It in Five Minutes
- Look inside the file. Drop the APK into our free APK Checker to see its permissions and who signed it - it runs in your browser and uploads nothing.
- Cut back its permissions. Open Settings, then Apps, then MovieBox, then Permissions, and switch off anything a video app does not need, such as contacts, SMS or your location.
- Run a Play Protect scan. In the Play Store, tap your profile picture, then Play Protect, then Scan - it checks apps from outside Google Play too.
- Never pay inside it. Do not type card details into the app or any pop-up it shows, however official it looks.
- When in doubt, uninstall. Removing it takes seconds, and a free app is not worth a stolen account.
The exact menu names can differ a little on Tecno and Infinix phones, but the settings are usually in the same place. Our guide on how to install an APK safely covers the rest.
Free, Legal Apps That Do the Same Job
- Tubi. Thousands of films and series, free with ads, available in many countries.
- Pluto TV. Hundreds of free live channels laid out like a TV guide, including news, film and sports channels.
- Free legal IPTV. If you want live TV from around the world, our list of free legal IPTV playlists works with any IPTV player.
None of them will show every new cinema release, and that is the honest trade. But they are free, they come from known companies, and they will still be there next month.
Quick questions
Is MovieBox safe to download?
Nobody has published a security test of the app, so no one can promise it is safe. The bigger risks are copycat download sites and the fact that pirate apps are a common way to spread malware.
Is MovieBox legal?
The MPA and Canal+ have reported it to the EU as a piracy operation, and rightsholders say it streams films and sports without a licence. In many countries, watching pirated streams is illegal.
Why does MovieBox have so many downloads?
It is free, it promises live football, and it sits in the app store built into Tecno, Infinix and itel phones, which are very popular in Africa.
How can I check if a MovieBox APK is safe?
Open the file in a free APK analyzer to see its permissions and signer, and run a Play Protect scan after installing. If it asks for contacts, SMS or payment details, delete it.
What is a safe alternative to MovieBox?
Tubi and Pluto TV are free, legal and supported by ads. For live channels, free legal IPTV playlists work in any IPTV player app.
The bottom line
300 million downloads makes MovieBox popular, not safe or legal. If you want free films and TV, a legal app costs you nothing but a few ads.
