Plex Media Player, the full-screen Plex app built for PCs wired to a TV, was retired by Plex in January 2020, and this page covers what replaced it, what Plex charges for now, and the free alternatives worth moving to.

So this page now answers the question the download button used to: what happened, what Plex costs in 2026, and what to use instead.
THE SHORT VERSION
Plex Media Player is gone and is not coming back. Plex Media Server is alive and free on your own network, but watching your own films away from home now needs a paid pass, which is why most people arrive here looking for something else.
What Happened to Plex Media Player
Plex Media Player was the "10-foot" app, meaning a full-screen interface you drove with a remote from the sofa, on a PC wired to the television. Plex announced in August 2019 that it was winding it down, and support finished in January 2020.
The replacement arrived in two pieces rather than one. The Plex desktop app is an ordinary windowed program for Windows and macOS, and Plex HTPC, released afterwards, brought back the full-screen remote-friendly mode.
Old installers still circulate on forums and mirror sites. They have had no security update in over six years and will not be getting one, so treat anything advertised as a fresh build of Plex Media Player as something other than what it claims.
Where Plex Stands Today
The server half of the product is very much alive. Plex Media Server still scans your files, pulls in cover art, cast lists and episode guides, and streams the results to phones, consoles and smart TVs.
The current stable server release is 1.43.3, published in August 2026, with 1.43.4 available as a beta. The companion desktop app sits at 1.115.0.
Plex hands those out per account from its own site rather than from fixed addresses, which is why there is no download button on this page any more.
What Plex Charges For Now
This is the change most people came here about. Since April 29, 2025, watching your own video files from outside your home network requires a paid pass.
Either the person running the server holds a Plex Pass, which covers everyone they share with, or each viewer holds a Plex Pass or the cheaper Remote Watch Pass. Plex began enforcing it app by app through late 2025, starting with Roku and spreading to Android, iOS, PlayStation and Xbox.
What is still free. Watching on your own home network costs nothing and always has. Streaming music through Plexamp and photos through the Plex Photos app are exempt from the remote restriction as well, so it is personal video, away from home, that is now behind the pass.
Update Your Server Before Anything Else
On September 4, 2026, Plex told server owners to update immediately after patching several security flaws it has not described publicly, with CVE identifiers still pending. The fixed builds are Plex Media Server 1.43.3 and Plex Desktop 1.115.0.
Anything older should be updated today. A media server is one of the few things in a house that deliberately accepts connections from the open internet, which makes an unpatched one worth more to an attacker than most people assume.
Jellyfin, Emby or Kodi
Three tools cover what Plex does, and they split the job differently. The last column is the decision rather than a description.

Jellyfin Server is where most people leaving Plex land, and the Jellyfin 12.0 release reworked the interface and sped up large library scans considerably.
The honest trade-off is polish. Plex's mobile and TV apps are smoother and its remote setup is close to automatic, while Jellyfin asks you to do more of the plumbing yourself.
Emby sits between the two, free to run and paid to get the good mobile apps. Kodi is the direct heir to what this page used to be about, and it connects to a Jellyfin, Emby or Plex server through an add-on if the library lives elsewhere.
There is a Kodi build for Android for TV boxes and sticks, which is how most people run it on a television now.
If You Only Want to Play Files, Skip the Server
A media server exists to send video to other devices. If everything you watch happens on the machine the files already live on, you are running a lot of machinery for nothing.
VLC Media Player plays essentially anything with no extra components, and mpv does the same with a near-invisible interface and very little overhead.
MPC-BE and PotPlayer suit people who like adjusting things, with per-file audio and subtitle settings that survive a restart.
On a Mac, IINA is the one to reach for, built on mpv but shaped like a native macOS app. The rest are on the media players page.
Getting a Library Ready for Any Server
Every one of these tools identifies films and shows by filename, so tidy names matter more than which server you pick. tinyMediaManager renames files to a consistent pattern and fetches posters, plot summaries and cast data before the server ever sees them.
If the source is a disc, MakeMKV copies DVD and Blu-ray titles to MKV files without re-encoding, and the current MakeMKV beta key guide covers keeping it free.
HandBrake then shrinks those files to a sensible size, and MKVToolNix strips out the audio tracks and subtitles you will never use, neither of which touches picture quality.
When a File Refuses to Play
Most playback failures come down to a missing codec, the small piece of software that knows how to unpack a particular video format. Servers hide this by converting on the fly, which is why the same file can play on a phone and fail on a desktop.

Watching on a Phone or Tablet
Without a server, the simplest route is copying files to the device or reading them from a shared folder over your own network. VLC for Android and MX Player both open network shares directly.
Jellyfin and Emby publish their own mobile apps too, so the phone side of a Plex setup carries over without much fuss.
Who Should Stay With Plex
Plenty of people, honestly. A lifetime Plex Pass makes the 2025 change irrelevant, and Plex still has the widest device support and the most forgiving remote setup in this category.
The case for moving is narrower than the noise suggests. It fits you if you share a library with family in other households, you do not want a subscription, and you are willing to set up port forwarding or a reverse proxy yourself.

Can I still download Plex Media Player?
Not from here, and not from Plex. It was retired in January 2020 and is absent from the official download page, so the copies still circulating are unmaintained and unpatched.
Is Plex still free?

Plex Media Server 1.43.3 or newer, and Plex Desktop 1.115.0 or newer. Plex patched undisclosed security flaws in those builds in September 2026 and asked every server owner to update.
