Voice messages and calls silent on WhatsApp Desktop? The usual cause is a missing Opus decoder - and it takes about two minutes to fix.
You tap a voice message on WhatsApp Desktop and nothing plays. No error, no sound - just silence. It is one of the most common complaints with the Microsoft Store version, and it is not your speakers.
WhatsApp sends voice notes and call audio using the Opus codec. If Windows has no way to decode Opus, the desktop app plays nothing. Here is the fix.
Install an Opus decoder for Windows and restart the app. The simplest one is the free DC-Bass Source Mod - it adds Opus support to Windows so WhatsApp Desktop can play voice messages again.
Download it, close WhatsApp fully, install, reopen. Your voice notes should play straight away.
Fix silent voice messages: step by step
- Download the DC-Bass Source Mod from free-codecs.com.
- Close WhatsApp Desktop completely. Right-click its icon in the system tray (bottom-right, near the clock) and choose Exit - closing the window is not enough.
- Run the installer and accept the default options. It takes a few seconds.
- Reopen WhatsApp Desktop and play any voice message. Sound should now work.
If you cannot install software on a work computer, save the voice note (or export the chat) and open the file in VLC Media Player. VLC carries its own Opus decoder and plays the message with no system changes.
Why this happens
Opus is a lightweight codec built for clear speech at tiny file sizes, which is exactly what a messaging app needs. WhatsApp leans on it for both voice notes and calls.
The catch: the Microsoft Store version of WhatsApp runs sandboxed and relies on Windows to decode Opus. On many PCs that decoder is simply not present, so playback fails silently. Adding one - via DC-Bass Source Mod - fills the gap.

Calls sound bad, not silent? Try these
If you can hear audio but calls sound rough, that is a different problem - usually your network or Windows sound settings, not the codec. Work through these.
Low quality or muffled audio Check your connection first. A weak or busy Wi-Fi signal drags call quality down. Move closer to the router or switch networks, and close apps that eat bandwidth in the background.
Choppy audio or voice breakup This points to packet loss or congestion. Restart your router, switch to a stronger network, and shut down background downloads. On mobile data, make sure you have a solid signal.
One-way audio or no mic Open Settings, Privacy, Microphone and confirm WhatsApp is allowed to use it. Check your volume is up and not muted, then restart the app.
Echo or feedback Your mic is picking up the speaker. Use headphones or earphones and avoid speakerphone mode. Nudging the volume down helps too.
Wrong output or muted in the mixer Right-click the speaker icon in the tray, open Volume mixer, and make sure WhatsApp is not muted or turned down, and that it is pointed at the speakers you are actually using.
Router and volume-mixer tweaks will not bring back silent voice messages. If voice notes make no sound at all, it is the missing Opus decoder - install that first, and only look at network settings if your calls still sound rough.
