Downloader by AFTVnews is a free app from developer Elias Saba that puts a web address bar and a remote-friendly browser on your Fire TV, Google TV, Android TV, phone or tablet. You type an address, it fetches the file, and Android offers to install it. It costs nothing, funded by donations and an occasional banner on the home screen.
Streaming boxes make it deliberately hard to install anything their own store does not carry.
Downloader is the missing step: type a web address with your remote, and it fetches the file so Android can install it.
Version 2.0.4, released on 31 July 2026, is a single fix - downloads from MediaFire had stopped working on some devices and now work again.
Where Downloader Fits in the Chain
Nobody actually wants Downloader. People want a media centre or an IPTV player on a box whose store does not offer one, and Downloader is the link in the middle that gets the file onto the device.
The chain runs: find the address of the file, type it into Downloader, let it download, then let Android install it. That is the whole job.
It is not an app store, it does not host anything, and it does not play video. It fetches what you point it at.
The app has been doing this since 2016 and has passed 100 million users, which is why almost every set-top install guide on the internet assumes you already have it.
What You Actually Do With It
There are four ways to get a file into the app, and the second and third are the ones that save you fighting an on-screen keyboard with a directional pad.
- Type a full web address. Point it straight at a file, or at a page, and the built-in browser opens so you can find the download link yourself.
- Search instead of typing. The same address bar doubles as a Google search box, so a half-remembered app name is enough to start.
- Enter a numeric short code. Guides publish short codes through the AFTVnews URL shortener, and the "#" button opens a numeric keypad for them - by far the fastest route on a remote.
- Save a favourite. Sites you return to can be stored, imported from a file or URL, and exported again when you set up a second device.
A Files screen lists everything you have downloaded, and lets you install or delete items individually or clear the lot in one go. Deleting the installer after a successful install is worth the habit, since these files are dead weight afterwards.
The Fire TV Change Nobody Tells You About
In March 2026, version 2.0.2 stopped Downloader registering itself as a web browser on Fire TV devices and Fire tablets, to comply with Amazon policy.
What this means in practice. On Fire TV, other apps can no longer hand links to Downloader, and you cannot set it as your default browser. The browser inside the app still works exactly as before - you just have to start from Downloader rather than arrive there from somewhere else.
On Google TV and Android TV the restriction does not apply. There, Downloader still registers as a standard browser, can be set as the default, and accepts "downloader://" links that send a URL or short code straight into it.
This split is the single most confusing thing about the app right now, because guides written before March 2026 describe Fire TV behaviour that no longer exists.
Turn On Installs Before You Start
Android will refuse to install anything Downloader fetches until you give Downloader permission to install apps. This one step is behind most of the "it downloaded but nothing happened" confusion.
On Fire TV the setting lives under Settings, My Fire TV, Developer Options, and on Google TV and Android TV it is under Apps, Special app access, Install unknown apps. Phones and tablets prompt you the first time and you can simply accept.
Downloaded files land in the Download/Downloader folder on internal storage, on every device. The folder is fixed and can no longer be changed, which is a compatibility decision rather than a limitation you need to work around.
What People Install With It
The destinations are the point, and most of them fall into two groups.
- Media centres and players. Kodi for Android is the classic one, with VLC for Android and MX Player close behind for plain file playback.
- IPTV apps. TiviMate is the usual target, particularly when it has been pulled from the Play Store again and sideloading is the only route.

Check the APK Before You Install It
Downloader fetches whatever you point it at, faithfully and without judgement. That is the tool working correctly, and it is also the risk.
Repackaged APKs are the real danger here. A file can carry the right name, the right icon and the right version number while being signed by somebody else entirely, and a TV screen gives you almost no way to notice.

Who Should Look Elsewhere
Here is the concrete tell: if you are holding the device you want to install on, and it has a touchscreen, you do not need Downloader. Chrome plus your Files app already does everything it does, faster.
The app earns its place when your only input device is a remote with a directional pad, and typing a URL any other way is genuinely painful. On a phone it is a solution to a problem you do not have.
