PhotoCraft brings Photoshop-style editing to a free, open-source desktop application, with layers, masks, brushes and editable text.
It works offline and offers a familiar starting point for anyone used to Adobe's layout. Version 0.3.0 improves everyday editing and file handling, although PhotoCraft remains an early-alpha project.
What Can You Do with PhotoCraft?
PhotoCraft combines photo adjustments with tools for building layered graphics. You can crop a picture, paint over an area, add text and combine images in one document.
Its editing tools include selections, brushes, gradients, shapes and retouching controls. Adjustment layers let you change brightness or color separately from the original image, while masks limit an edit to part of a layer.
For a first project, try a simple thumbnail: open a photo, crop it, add a short heading and export a copy. That gives you a useful way to judge the editor without committing a complicated project to it.
Opening and Saving Photoshop PSD Files
PhotoCraft opens and saves layered PSD documents and supports the larger PSB format. It also has its own .pcraft project format.
PSD support does not guarantee that every Photoshop document will look or behave identically. Keep the original file and compare exported results before using PhotoCraft for a shared project.
Image Formats and Export Options
Supported formats include JPEG, PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, BMP, TGA, ICO and AVIF. Export controls cover format, quality, transparency and scale.
Keep an editable project alongside the exported image. A flattened JPEG is useful for sharing, but it cannot preserve separate text and adjustment layers for later changes.
What's New in PhotoCraft 0.3.0?
Released on October 7, 2026, PhotoCraft 0.3.0 focuses on reliability and practical workflow fixes.
-
Document recovery: recovered unsaved work survives another crash, and deeply nested
.pcraftdocuments reopen correctly. - Export fixes: JPEG and other formats without transparency place transparent areas over white. Files without color profiles receive sRGB.
- File warnings: incomplete JPEGs and multi-frame files now open with a warning. TGA appears in Save As and Export As.
- Editing shortcuts: New from Clipboard, copy-transform commands, keyboard layer navigation and number-key opacity controls improve routine editing.
- Undo and preferences: undo and redo restore the targeted layer, while fixes address lost preferences when multiple windows save.
- More languages: interface options include Japanese, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Spanish, Russian and Czech.

Windows Installer or Portable Download?
The official downloads include a 64-bit installer for most Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs, plus a portable ZIP that you can extract and run without installation. Separate 32-bit and ARM64 packages are available.
Choose the package that matches your Windows system type. The portable edition is a convenient starting point if you want to try the editor from a folder.
Mac and Linux Versions
PhotoCraft also provides a universal macOS download for Intel and Apple silicon Macs. Linux choices include AppImage, Debian and RPM packages, with x86_64 and ARM64 builds.
A downloadable WebAssembly build is available for self-hosting in a browser.
Who Should Wait Before Switching?
PhotoCraft is worth exploring if you enjoy testing new creative software. For deadline-sensitive work, try it alongside your existing editor and check the tools your projects actually need.
A useful trial is to reopen a saved copy, inspect the layers and compare the export with your original. Familiar menus alone are not enough to decide if an editor fits your workflow.
