Grok - AI Assistant 1.2.20

Grok is xAI's AI assistant for Android, and its distinguishing feature is access to live posts on X rather than a fixed training set.

The file here is version 1.2.20, 109 MB, and the app itself is free to install.

Download the Grok APK - or read the next two sections first, because this file is not the Play-free option people assume it is.

Why the APK still needs Google Play

xAI ships Grok with Google's automatic integrity protection, known as PairIP, switched on. That is a licence check baked into the app itself, not something a download site can strip out or work around.

Every time you open the app it contacts the Play Store and asks whether the Google account on the device has acquired Grok. If Play is missing, signed out, or the account has never installed Grok, the check fails and you get the dialog instead of the app.

The practical fix, when Play is present, takes about ten seconds. Open the Play Store, search for Grok, and let the listing load once. That registers the app against your account, and the next launch goes straight through.

Who this file is no use to

The clearest tell takes one glance at your home screen. No Play Store icon, or Settings showing no Google account, and Grok is simply not available to you as an app.

That rules out recent Huawei handsets, de-Googled ROMs without Play, most Android TV boxes, and Amazon Fire tablets running stock Fire OS. The file installs on all of them and opens on none.

If that is your device, use grok.com in your phone's browser instead. It is the full assistant, it needs no install, and it does not care what Play thinks.

Failing that, one of the other Android AI apps compared further down will work where Grok cannot.

When sideloading Grok still makes sense

With Play installed and signed in, there are three honest reasons to take the file from here rather than tapping Install in the store.

• You want a specific version. Staged rollouts mean Play often serves an older build than this one, and sometimes a new release breaks something you relied on.
• You are setting up several devices. Download once, install on all of them, instead of pulling 104 MB down per phone.
• Your Play install keeps failing. Stuck downloads and "app not installed" loops sometimes clear when you install the file directly.

If none of those describe you, open Play and search for Grok. That is genuinely the better answer, and any download page that will not tell you so is selling something.

What the free tier actually includes

The app costs nothing to install and you can use it without paying, but "free" has limits worth knowing before you commit.

Free covers chat, reasoning, live web and X search, file and image analysis, and voice conversations. Usage is capped, and xAI does not publish the exact numbers, so treat any specific figure you read elsewhere with suspicion.

SuperGrok is the paid tier, sold through xAI rather than the Play billing screen. It raises the caps and unlocks the newest models and multi-agent mode. Nothing on this page requires it.

You will need an account to sign in. There is no anonymous mode, so an email address or an existing X login is the minimum entry price.

Check the file before you install it

This matters more for an AI app than for most, because a fake build harvesting X credentials is a credible attack rather than a hypothetical one.

1. Run the file through our APK Checker, which reads XAPK bundles as well as plain APKs and reports the package name, version, signing certificate and permissions without installing anything.
2. Confirm the package name reads ai.x.grok. Anything else is not xAI's app, whatever the icon and the title claim.
3. Read the permission list. Camera, microphone, location and contacts are expected for voice, vision and sign-in, but SMS and call logs are not, and finding them means walk away.
4. Enable installation from unknown sources only for the app you are installing from, then switch it back off afterwards.

The file here is the unmodified official build, mirrored from EU and US servers and scanned before listing. Nothing is repackaged and nothing is bundled with it.

Installing the XAPK

One thing to get straight first: this download is an XAPK, not a single APK file. Tapping it will not install anything.

An XAPK is a bundle. Inside are the main app plus separate pieces for your processor, your screen density and your language, and they have to be installed together in one go.

1. Download the file to your phone. Android saves it to your Downloads folder without offering to install it, which is expected rather than a failure.
2. Install a split installer from the Play Store. SAI and APKCombo Installer are the two common free ones, and either handles this format.
3. Open the installer, point it at the XAPK, and grant the install permission it asks for. It unpacks the bundle and installs every piece as one app.
4. Open the Play Store and load the Grok listing once, so the licence check passes when you first launch the app.

Grok needs Android 9.0 or newer. At 104 MB it is a substantial download on mobile data, so use wifi and leave room for the app to grow as it stores conversations.

Updates do not arrive automatically with a sideloaded build. You either come back here for a newer file or switch to the Play version once it reaches you.

What it does well

The live X connection is the real differentiator. Ask about something happening this hour and Grok answers from posts rather than from a summary of the past.

That makes it genuinely better than the alternatives for breaking news, sport in progress, and any question where the answer is a conversation rather than a fact.

Beyond that it does what the others do: long-form writing, coding help, image and document analysis, general questions. The interface is plain and quick, which suits a phone.

Its personality is deliberately less filtered than most assistants, which some people prefer and which has produced public controversy more than once. Worth knowing before you choose it as your everyday assistant.

How it compares to the other Android AI apps

ChatGPT is the default choice and the strongest all-rounder, with better long-document handling than Grok.

DeepSeek is the one to install for coding and step-by-step reasoning, and it costs nothing.

Perplexity answers research questions with sources you can click, which matters if you need to check the answer rather than trust it.

Monica AI puts several models behind one interface, and Vibe, from Mistral, is the European option.

Grok's case against all of them is one sentence: it reads X live and they do not. If that is not what you need, one of the others is probably a better daily driver.
