Open HEIC Files with XnView MP: No Paid Codec Needed (2026)

XnView MP opens iPhone HEIC photos on Windows the moment it is installed, with no Microsoft Store codec, no purchase and no restart - the extensions most guides tell you to install are only for File Explorer and the Photos app.

HEIC decoding is built into XnView MP itself, so the whole setup is one download.

This guide covers which of the two XnView downloads to pick, how to make Windows open HEIC files in it by default, and what to install only if you also want thumbnails in File Explorer.

If you followed an earlier version of this page and installed the HEIF extension first, nothing is broken - it just was not necessary for XnView.

Step 1: Install XnView MP, Not XnView Classic

The XnView download page serves two different programs: XnView Classic (version 2.x) and XnView MP (version 1.x). Pick MP. It is the current version, it runs on Windows 10 and 11, macOS and Linux, and it is the one with HEIC and HEIF support built in.

The installer and the portable ZIP both work. The portable build needs no administrator rights, which makes it the choice on a work laptop.

XnView MP is free for private, educational and non-profit use. Business use needs a licence from the developer.

• Download and run the XnView MP installer, or unpack the portable ZIP to any folder.
• Open XnView MP and drag a .heic file onto its window, or use File, then Open. The photo should display straight away.
• If it does, you are done with setup. If you get an error, jump to the troubleshooting section - it is almost always the wrong download.

Step 2: Make XnView MP the Default for HEIC Files

Double-clicking a .heic file will still send it to Windows Photos until you change the association.

• Right-click any .heic file in File Explorer and choose Open with, then Choose another app.
• Select XnView MP from the list. If it is missing, scroll to the bottom and browse to xnviewmp.exe in the folder you installed or unpacked it to.
• On Windows 11 click Always. On Windows 10 tick Always use this app to open .heic files, then OK.
• Repeat once for a .heif file if your camera or phone produces those, because Windows treats the two extensions separately.

Step 3 (Optional): Thumbnails in File Explorer and the Photos App

XnView MP shows HEIC thumbnails in its own browser pane without any help. What it cannot do is make File Explorer, the Photos app or the Windows lock-screen picker understand the format, because those use the Windows imaging layer rather than XnView's decoder.

If you want thumbnails there too, install Microsoft's two extensions - and it has to be both, because the HEIF Image Extensions package handles the container while the HEVC extension decodes the picture inside it. The HEVC one is sold in the Store, but the free way to get the HEVC Video Extension is covered in its own guide.

After installing both, restart File Explorer from Task Manager or sign out and back in. A full reboot is not required.

Convert HEIC to JPG in XnView MP

For a single photo, open it and use File, then Save As, and pick JPG. A quality setting of 90 to 95 keeps it visually identical to the original at a fraction of the size of a lossless format.

For a folder, select the files in the browser pane and open Tools, then Batch Convert. Choose JPG in the Output tab, set the same quality, and click Convert. Metadata such as capture date and GPS is carried across by default.

When HEIC Still Will Not Open

"Unknown format" or a blank frame in XnView. You are almost certainly running XnView Classic rather than MP - check Help, then About, and a version starting with 2 is Classic. Install MP from the same download page.

An old MP build. HEIC arrived in XnView MP 0.93 and has been improved since. If About shows anything below 1.0, update; the current release is well past that.

The file is not really HEIC. Photos shared through some apps arrive renamed. Open the file in XnView MP and check Image, then Properties - if the format reads JPEG, the extension is wrong and renaming it fixes it.

Thumbnails missing in File Explorer only. That is the Windows imaging layer, not XnView. Install both Microsoft extensions as described in Step 3 and restart Explorer.

Slow browsing of a large HEIC folder. HEIC is expensive to decode. In Tools, then Settings, under the Browser section, reduce the thumbnail size or let XnView use the embedded preview thumbnail instead of decoding the full image.
