Best Linux Distros for Beginners: 5 Easy Picks for Windows Switchers

Your PC can't run Windows 11, or you're tired of paying for upgrades - a beginner-friendly Linux distro can keep that computer fast, safe and free for years.

Best Linux Distros for Beginners

The good news is that you no longer need the command line to use Linux day to day.

Microsoft's free Windows 10 security updates now run until October 12, 2027, which gives you time to test Linux properly before you decide.

Short answer: coming from Windows, start with Linux Mint or Zorin OS.

The Quick Pick

Distro Choose it if Minimum RAM
Linux Mint 22.3 You want the most Windows-like, low-drama switch 2GB (4GB recommended)
Zorin OS 18 You want help finding replacements for your Windows apps 2GB (Lite edition for older PCs)
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS You want the biggest community and the longest support 6GB
Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS You game or have an NVIDIA graphics card 4GB
elementary OS 8.1 You are coming from a Mac and like a tidy desktop See vendor specs

All five are free, 64-bit only, and can run straight from a USB stick so you can try them before installing anything.

What Makes a Distro Beginner-Friendly

  • A live USB mode. You can test the whole system without touching your Windows drive.
  • A graphical installer. Setup is a few clicks, with no typed commands.
  • An app store. Browsers, office apps and media players install like phone apps.
  • Automatic drivers. Wi-Fi, graphics and printers work after the first boot on most PCs.
  • A big community. Whatever goes wrong, someone has already posted the fix.

1. Linux Mint - The Easiest Switch From Windows

Linux Mint is the safest first step for Windows users. Its Cinnamon desktop has a taskbar, a start menu and a system tray exactly where you expect them.

The current release, Mint 22.3, is built on Ubuntu 24.04 and gets updates until April 2029. Mint 23 is planned for December 2026.

  • Timeshift takes system snapshots, so a bad update can be rolled back in minutes.
  • Driver Manager finds and installs graphics and Wi-Fi drivers for you.
  • Media codecs are one tick box in the installer - tick it and videos and music play straight away.
  • Three editions: Cinnamon for most PCs, and Xfce or MATE for older, slower ones.

2. Zorin OS - Built for Windows 10 Refugees

Zorin OS is designed for people leaving Windows, and version 18 was released on the day Windows 10 support ended. Its desktop looks and behaves like Windows out of the box.

Its standout feature is Windows app help. Double-click a Windows installer and Zorin suggests the best way to run it, or a native Linux alternative, for more than 240 popular apps.

  • Core is free and ships several desktop layouts, including Windows and macOS styles. The paid Pro edition adds more layouts and extra creative apps.
  • Lite is the free edition for older, low-spec computers.
  • Updates for Zorin OS 18 run until June 2029.

3. Ubuntu LTS - The Safest Long-Term Bet

Ubuntu is one of the most widely used desktop Linux systems, so almost every tutorial and app is written with it in mind. The LTS (Long-Term Support) versions get five years of free security updates.

The newest version, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, arrived in April 2026. It now asks for 6GB of RAM, so on an older 4GB laptop Linux Mint or Zorin OS will feel much faster.

In the installer, tick the option to install third-party software for graphics, Wi-Fi and extra media formats. Apps install from the built-in App Center.

4. Pop!_OS - Best for Gamers and NVIDIA Cards

Pop!_OS comes from System76, a company that sells Linux computers. Its biggest beginner win is a separate NVIDIA download with the graphics driver already included, which removes the most common Linux headache.

Version 24.04 LTS, released in December 2025, introduced COSMIC, System76's own new desktop. It has automatic window tiling, a fast launcher on the Windows key, and smart graphics switching on laptops.

Before you install:

System76 says Secure Boot must be turned off in your PC's firmware settings first. Pick the NVIDIA download for GTX 16 series cards and newer, and the standard one for everything else.

5. elementary OS - The Mac-Style Choice

elementary OS has a calm, Mac-like desktop called Pantheon, with a dock at the bottom and very little clutter. The current version, 8.1, is built on Ubuntu 24.04.

The download is pay-what-you-want, and you can enter 0 to get it free. Its AppCenter lists curated apps, and you can control what each app is allowed to access.

Got an Old PC? Pick a Light Edition

If your computer has 4GB of RAM or less, skip the full desktops and choose Linux Mint Xfce or Zorin OS Lite. Both look familiar and stay responsive on hardware that struggles with Windows 10.

Check one thing first: every distro in this guide needs a 64-bit processor. A PC from the last 15 years almost certainly has one.

How to Try Linux Without Losing Windows

  1. Back up your PC. A full system image of Windows lets you undo everything later.
  2. Download the ISO file. Use the official site linked in each section above.
  3. Write it to a USB stick. Rufus is the fastest option on Windows, and 8GB or more is enough.
  4. Boot from the stick. Restart and tap your PC's boot menu key, usually F12, F11 or Esc, then pick the USB drive.
  5. Choose Try, not Install. Test Wi-Fi, sound, your printer and your favourite apps before changing anything.

Want to test several distros from one stick? Ventoy lets you copy multiple ISO files onto one drive and pick from a boot menu - our Ventoy guide shows how.

On a Mac, or if you prefer a simpler tool, balenaEtcher writes the ISO in three clicks.

Quick questions

Which Linux distro is best for a Windows 10 user?

Linux Mint for the most familiar, stable switch, or Zorin OS if you want help replacing specific Windows apps.

Can I keep using Windows 10 for now?

Yes, if you enrol in Microsoft's Extended Security Updates, which now run until October 12, 2027. Our Windows 10 end of support explainer shows how to enrol for free.

Is Linux really free?

Yes. All five distros here are free to download and use, and only Zorin OS Pro is an optional paid edition.

Will my Windows programs run on Linux?

Many will not run directly, but most have free Linux versions or alternatives, such as Firefox, Chrome, LibreOffice and VLC. Zorin OS tells you the best option for over 240 popular Windows apps.

Can Linux run on a computer with 4GB of RAM?

Yes. Linux Mint Xfce and Zorin OS Lite run well on 4GB, while Ubuntu 26.04 now asks for 6GB.

Will installing Linux delete my files?

Only if you choose to erase the disk. Trying Linux from a USB stick changes nothing, and a dual boot keeps Windows and your files in place, but back up first either way.

The bottom line

For most people leaving Windows, Linux Mint is the easiest start. Try it from a USB stick this week, and tell us which distro you picked.
