The popular open-source media player MPC-BE has rolled out version 1.8.8, bringing significant improvements to streaming capabilities and professional video workflow support.

This latest update addresses critical issues with internet radio playback while expanding codec compatibility for content creators and video professionals.
Key improvements in MPC-BE 1.8.8 include fixes for Shoutcast and Icecast radio station name displays, which previously caused crashes in certain scenarios.
The update introduces support for Advanced Professional Video (APV), a next-generation intra-frame codec designed for professional video editing and post-production.
Similar to Apple ProRes, APV is optimized for real-time encoding and decoding up to 8K resolution with high-quality chroma subsampling (4:4:4) and bit depths up to 16-bit, making it ideal for editing workflows rather than content distribution.
Both MP4Splitter and MatroskaSplitter now handle APV-encoded files seamlessly.
Audio enthusiasts will appreciate the updated AC-4 decoder in MpaDecFilter, while hardware decoding has been refined with specific adjustments for HEVC 4:4:4 10/16-bit content when used with madVR renderer.
The built-in YouTube parser now intelligently filters out audio tracks with automatic machine translation, improving the user experience for international content.
The player interface receives quality-of-life improvements with a new "After Playback: Close file and minimize player" command, alongside various interface refinements and a workaround for VSFilter subtitle track selection bugs.
Under the hood, MPC-BE 1.8.8 ships with updated components including MPC Video Renderer 0.9.17, MPC Script Source 0.2.13, and refreshed libraries such as ffmpeg n8.1-dev, MediaInfo git-v25.09, and vvdec v3.0.0.
The release also features updated translations in 15 languages, including newly added Arabic translation.
