Sony has announced that it will cease production of recordable Blu-ray discs, MiniDiscs, MD-Data, and MiniDV cassettes for the consumer market starting in February 2025.
This decision reflects the declining demand for physical media, as many users have shifted to digital storage solutions like cloud services and streaming platforms.
It's important to note that this move will not affect pre-recorded Blu-ray discs containing movies or TV shows; only blank discs used for personal recording are being discontinued.
Sony has also stated that there are no plans for successor models to these products.
The company will continue to produce these media formats for business clients and the film industry until it becomes unprofitable.
This means that while consumers will no longer have access to these recordable media, corporate customers and professionals in the entertainment sector can still obtain them for the foreseeable future.
