Spotify is asking some Premium Family members to scan a QR code on the plan manager's phone to prove they live in the same home.

You have 7 days from the notification to do it, and you both need to be in the same room. Miss it and you can't join another Family or Duo plan for 12 months.
Here's how to do it in under a minute, and what your options are if it doesn't work.
How to Do the Spotify QR Code Check
- Update the app on both phones. The check only works in the Spotify mobile app, and both of you need the latest version.
- The plan manager opens the code. Tap your profile picture, then Your Premium, then Manage.
- The member scans it. Point your phone's camera at the manager's screen. That's it.
Why a screenshot won't work.
The code changes every few seconds, so a photo sent over chat will already be out of date. Spotify says to scan it in person.
The Code Won't Scan? Try This
- Check the date and time on both phones. If one is wrong, the code can fail.
- Close and reopen the Spotify app on both phones.
- Update again. An old app version on either side is the most common snag.
If it still fails, Spotify's Family address verification page has a Contact us link.
What Happens If You Miss the 7 Days
- You lose the Family plan. You can't join a different Family or Duo plan for 12 months.
- Your account isn't deleted. Your playlists stay, and you can still use Spotify for free.
- You can still pay for your own Premium. Individual and other single plans stay open to you.
Spotify says it does not track your location and only checks your address. It tried a GPS-based check back in 2018 and dropped it after a backlash, so the QR code is the gentler sequel.
Not Living Together? Your Options
Students away at university, parents working abroad and grandparents in another town are the people this catches. If that's you, here's what still works.
| Option | What you get | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Spotify Free | Your playlists, with ads and less control on mobile | Free |
| Your own Premium plan | Everything you had on Family | Monthly fee |
| Play music you own | Your MP3 and FLAC files, no account, no checks | Free |
On a PC, the free tier is more relaxed than on a phone. Install the Spotify desktop app and your playlists are right where you left them.
Own your music? Nobody can check your address.
If you have a music collection on your PC, a free player plays it with no subscription. foobar2000 is light and fast, MusicBee is great for big libraries, and AIMP has a clean, friendly look.
Quick questions
Is the Spotify QR code message a scam?
Not if it shows up inside the Spotify app. The real code only ever appears on the plan manager's phone, never in an email, text or letter.
Got a "Spotify verification" QR code some other way? Check where it leads before you scan it on your phone. ConvertICO's free QR Code Scanner reads a screenshot or photo in your browser, shows the real website name and warns about look-alike addresses, without opening the link.
Does everyone on a Family plan have to scan?
No. Spotify says "some" members may be asked. If you haven't had a notification, you don't need to do anything.
Can I scan the code over a video call?
Spotify says to scan in person. The check exists to confirm you live together, so a remote scan goes against the plan's rules.
Will I lose my playlists if verification fails?
No. Your account and playlists stay. You just drop off the Family plan.
Does Spotify track my location for this?
Spotify says no. It says it only checks your address, and the QR code proves you are in the same place at that moment.
Got the notification? Update both apps, get in the same room and scan - it takes a minute and keeps you on the plan.
If the Family plan doesn't fit your life, the free Spotify desktop app or one of our free media players will keep the music going. Did the check work for you? Tell us in the comments.
