h264 fails for old hardware and low performance energy saving machines.

Long Live XviD.

You are just a troll who love ancient machines.

x264 is the new hotness of encoders. Compared to XviD and DivX, there really is no comparison.

Also, interlaced is supported now, and works amazing. You can archive interlaced material for more fluid and natural, TV look.

the best just keeps getting better, and x264 wins in all situations when comparing it to Xvid, the experts over at doom9 all agree that there is not a situation where Xvid (ASP) is superior to x264.

there should never be a situation where Xvid gives superior results to x264, if this does occur than without doubt x264 has been mishandled (utilized incorrectly with settings perhaps) in someway.

x264 is superior to ASP encoders in every sense of the word, x264 was designed from the ground up to be a LOW & HIGH bitrate encoder!

There is a lot of positive talk about x264, and rightly so. For high-yield encodings, it does a better job than XviD, but for low bitrate encodings like 128kbps and a small screen size like 352x240, XviD still does a better job.

Minju, I am coming into terms with the Google Video Codec and it is definitely a strong contender for XviD in the field of low bitrate encodings.

x264 now acts like a Bluray encoder. That means the artifacts are minimal at high bitrates. Looks good at 500 Kbps. Doesn't show blocking at like 700 Kbps. No longer drops frames.

The newer exe files are not compatible with older front-ends. CAVLC has "trellis" now. psy-trellis now works with CAVLC.

Better looking than DivX 8.0.

You cant compare it with xvid. Xvid and divx are for poor or blind people. x264 + Splash player and ATI GPU decoding = eye candy :)

Better than Xvid. VFW version is unreal! The desktop shots look beautiful. Does jaggies from time to time, but 90% of the time I can't see jaggies at 313 kbps.

The best codec. Earlier i used to use Xvid for iPod videos. Now i use H264 for encoding.A bit slow
than Xvid but quality is much superior. 2-Pass H264 gives the best quality by any codec.

should be the best codec now
compressibility is almost the best with a good avs and setting
color and visual quality can be tweaked with using a CQM and suitable setting
compatibility won't be a problem because of its advantages and source opening
de-blocking filter should be turned on forever because it helps increasing the compressibility and the only thing to do is to adjust it(from -3 to 3, or from -6 to 6 with ultra-low btirate)
speed is slow without doubt, but it should and it must bt slow
this codec is for next generational encoding
its speed won't be a problem
(in fact, it isn't so slow if not encoding a 720p stuff or something similar)

Slow as hell, even on the fastest machines! And that is the only problem I can think of. Other than that, the best codec out there, even at this stage.

Too much "co", not enough "dec".

I'm no video geek - all I want is to get my machine to stop telling me it can't play these vids. This doesn't do that, or if it does I can't figure out how.

ATM, x264 does bit any other codec i've tested... Compressibility = 5, bitrate control at 2-pass encodings = 5, encoding speed = 3.

better quality than any other codec i've used, however the de-blocking filter gives many features a smeared appearance and should be turned off at any bit-rate.

the codec default is to use de-blocking during encoding, the first thing you should do after installing is turn that feature off or adjust the strength and threshold to a level that doesn't make your video look like putty.
