What Copilot Actually Does

Think of it as a chat window that happens to be very good with language. You type or speak, and it handles the rest.

The everyday uses are the obvious ones: rewriting a clumsy paragraph, explaining something you half understand, drafting a reply you cannot face writing, or condensing something too long to read right now. It works across many languages and will shift between formal and casual if you ask it to.

Microsoft runs OpenAI's newest models behind it and exposes them as modes rather than model names, so you get careful reasoning when a question needs it and a fast answer when it does not, without choosing anything yourself.

Making Images From Words

Describe a picture and Copilot generates it - a poster, a rough logo idea, concept art, a graphic for a post - and hands back a few versions to download or share.

Image generation needs you to be signed in with a free Microsoft account, which is the main thing the account unlocks. The feature itself costs nothing.

It Looks Things Up, Too

Live web search is built in, so Copilot is not limited to what its model learned during training. Ask about today's news, the weather or something that happened last week and it fetches current information.

Answers usually arrive with source links, which matters more than it sounds - it is the difference between an answer you can check and one you have to trust.

What It Costs

The Android app is free, with unlimited chat, image generation and web search, and no trial clock. For most people that is the whole product.

The practical answer for most readers: if you do not work in Word and Excel all day, the free app is not a cut-down version of anything. It is the product.

How It Compares to the Other Assistants

Copilot's edge is that it is free, competent and tied into Microsoft's world, which matters if your work already lives there. It is not the only good option on Android.

ChatGPT is OpenAI's own app and the broadest of them, and Perplexity is the one to use when you need a source on every claim rather than a well-written paragraph.

Grok reads the live X feed as it answers, which is the right tool for anything still unfolding. Vibe from Mistral is the cheapest paid tier of the lot at $14.99 and keeps your data under EU law.

DeepSeek is strong at coding and reasoning and gives it away entirely, with the catch that your data sits on Chinese servers - our piece on what that means for your data is worth reading first.

And if choosing feels premature, Poe and Monica AI both put several assistants behind one login so you can run the same question through each.

Using Copilot on a Computer

Copilot is not only a phone app. On the desktop it sits in Microsoft Edge as a sidebar that can read and work with whatever page you have open, and copilot.microsoft.com works in any browser.

Sign in with the same account and your conversations follow you between phone and PC. If you would rather the assistant were built into the browser itself rather than bolted to the side of it, Comet Browser takes that approach.

What You Need to Run It

Copilot asks for Android 8.0 or newer and runs on phones and tablets alike, rearranging itself for bigger screens. The file size is listed at the top of this page, and it is a larger download than the chat window suggests.

Everything happens in the cloud, so there is no offline mode of any kind. Without a connection the app cannot answer anything at all.

Installing the APK Safely

Who Should Look Elsewhere

If you already pay one AI provider and use it hard, a direct subscription with them will stretch further than adding Microsoft 365 Premium on top for the same features.

If your interest is real-time social context, Grok is the better fit, and if you want to compare models side by side rather than settle on one, Poe is the more direct route. For everyone else who wants a free, capable assistant with nothing to sign up for, this is an easy pick.
