Many Windows apps are built with Microsoft's .NET, and they need the matching runtime installed before they will start.
If an app stopped with 'You must install or update .NET to run this application', this is usually the fix.
Download .NET Runtime 10.0.13 - free, from Microsoft, with 9.0.21 and 8.0.32 also available.
Which runtime do you need?
.NET comes as three runtimes, and the error message usually names the one it wants.
- .NET Runtime, this page, for console tools and background programs. It is the base the other two build on.
- .NET Desktop Runtime for ordinary windowed apps. If the message mentions WindowsDesktop, this is the one, and it already includes the .NET Runtime.
- ASP.NET Core Runtime for web apps and APIs running on your PC or a server.
Which version?
Install the major version the app asks for: 10, 9 or 8. They sit side by side, so adding one never removes or breaks another.
Within a major version, newer is always better. 10.0.13 runs anything built for 10.0, and like all three releases from 13 October 2026 it includes security fixes.
Support ends soon for 8 and 9. Microsoft stops updating .NET 8 and .NET 9 on 10 November 2026. Apps that need them keep working, but they get no more security fixes. .NET 10 is the long-term release, supported until November 2028.
Installing it
Run the installer and that is it; there is nothing to configure. Most PCs need the x64 version. Arm64 and x86 builds are on Microsoft's .NET download page.
.NET 10 is officially supported on Windows 11 and on the Enterprise, LTSC and IoT editions of Windows 10.
Other runtimes apps ask for
If an app still will not start, it may be missing a different building block. The Visual C++ Redistributable fixes most missing DLL errors, and the WebView2 Runtime fixes apps that open to a blank white window.
Older games may also want DirectX. More system components are in our other tools section.
Quick questions
Is it safe to install several .NET versions?
Yes. Each major version installs separately, and apps pick the one they were built for.
Can I uninstall the old versions?
Only if no app uses them. If something stops working afterwards, reinstall the version its error message names.
Is this the same as the .NET Framework?
No. The .NET Framework 4.8 is the older version built into Windows. Modern .NET, versions 5 to 10, is installed separately, and that is what this page offers.
The error says WindowsDesktop. Is this the right download?
No, you need the .NET Desktop Runtime, which includes this one.
