NVIDIA PureVideo Decoder is a discontinued MPEG-2 decoder plug-in from 2006 that added DVD and TV playback to Windows Media Player and Media Center on Windows XP, kept here as an archive - the job it did is now handled free by LAV Filters and by the decoder built into every modern graphics driver.
This one is a museum piece, and it is worth saying so before you download it.
The last build, 1.02-223, is dated 28 June 2006, and nothing has come since.
It was a paid MPEG-2 decoder plug-in for Windows XP, sold in Bronze, Gold and Platinum tiers, and the file everyone still downloads is the 30-day Platinum trial.
Everything it did, your computer now does for free. The short version is further down, but if you only read one line: install LAV Filters or the K-Lite Codec Pack instead.
What It Was For
In 2006, Windows could not play a DVD on its own. Windows Media Player needed a separate MPEG-2 decoder, and every PC that could play discs had one bundled by the manufacturer.
PureVideo Decoder, formerly the NVIDIA DVD Decoder, was NVIDIA's version of that plug-in. It slotted into Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center and handled DVD, MPEG-2 and TV tuner playback.
Its selling point was offloading the decoding work to the graphics card instead of the processor, which on a single-core machine of that era was the difference between smooth playback and a slideshow.
The three tiers were about audio, not video. Bronze gave stereo, Gold added Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby headphone modes, and Platinum added DTS on top.
Why It Stopped Mattering
Three things happened, and any one of them would have been enough.
The MPEG-2 patents expired. That is the reason free decoders can ship MPEG-2 today without a licence fee, and the reason nobody sells a DVD codec any more.
Microsoft removed DVD playback from Windows after Windows 7, and Windows Media Center disappeared entirely at Windows 10. The two applications this plug-in existed to serve are gone.
And the hardware decoding moved into the driver. Modern GeForce cards decode through NVDEC, which any player can reach through DXVA2 or D3D11 without a separate purchase, and it handles H.264, HEVC and AV1 rather than just MPEG-2.
What to Use Instead
For decoding, LAV Filters is the direct replacement and the component most modern players use internally. It decodes MPEG-2 along with virtually everything else, and it hands work to the GPU automatically.
If you would rather install one thing and be done, the K-Lite Codec Pack bundles LAV Filters with a player and sensible defaults. LAV Filters Megamix is the option for people who want the pieces without the pack.
For playback, VLC plays DVDs out of the box with nothing else installed. MPC-HC and MPC-BE are closer in spirit to the old lightweight setup, and PotPlayer is the feature-heavy option.
If picture quality on old standard-definition material is the point, madVR and the MPC Video Renderer do far more for a DVD than any 2006 decoder could, with better scaling and deinterlacing.

Turning On the Hardware Decoding You Already Paid For
The acceleration PureVideo charged for is now a checkbox. In MPC-HC it lives under Options, Internal Filters, and enabling hardware acceleration in MPC-HC walks through it.
It needs a current graphics driver to work properly, so the GeForce drivers are the actual modern equivalent of this product.
Not sure what your card can decode? GPU-Z lists the supported formats on its Advanced tab, including whether NVDEC covers AV1.
If You Are Keeping an XP Machine Alive
There are legitimate reasons to run this: a retro build, a Media Center box you never retired, or a capture setup that expects these specific DirectShow filters.
Two problems will meet you, and both are permanent.
The download is the Platinum trial. After 30 days it stops, and the registration expects a licence name and key that match exactly, which is what people ran into when they reported the decoder refusing their details.
The other is the "unable to initialize D3D device" error, which comes from a graphics card, driver or display setting the decoder was never built to handle. There is no patch coming, so a different decoder is the only fix.
For a period-correct free alternative on the same machine, ffdshow handles MPEG-2 and a great deal more, and the DScaler MPEG Filters and the MPEG-2TS Decoder cover DirectShow graphs that specifically want an MPEG-2 filter. Windows Media Player will use whichever one is installed.
Getting the Discs Off the Shelf Instead
If the goal is watching your DVD collection rather than preserving a 2006 setup, copying it to files solves the problem permanently.
MakeMKV pulls a disc into an MKV file without re-encoding, and HandBrake compresses the result to something a phone or TV will play.
PowerDVD remains the commercial route if you want a polished disc player with menus intact.

The installer is still hosted here because pages like this are the only place some of these files survive, and retro builders do come looking.
NVIDIA's own product page is still online, unchanged, still offering that same 2006 trial build. Treat both as an archive rather than a recommendation.
