VLC for Android: Install the APK, Play Any File, Subtitles

VLC for Android plays the MKV, HEVC and FLAC files that the stock player refuses, with no ads, no paid tier and no codec pack to hunt for - and this guide gets you from the APK to a playing file with subtitles in about ten minutes.

The reason VLC for Android works where other Android video players fail is simple: it carries its own decoders inside the app instead of asking Android for them.

That is also why nothing needs converting - the file plays as it is, which is the difference our explainer on decoders and renderers spells out.

Below is which file to download, how to install it, and where the subtitle, speed and sync controls actually are, using the labels from VideoLAN's own Android documentation.

Which File to Download

Google Play is the easy route, but if your device has no Play Store, the Play version is region-blocked, or you want a specific build, the APK is on our VLC for Android download page.

That page serves three version tracks in four builds each, so pick by this table rather than by the biggest number.

Within a track, arm64-v8a is right for almost every phone and tablet made since about 2017. armeabi-v7a is for old 32-bit phones, and the two x86 builds are for Chromebooks and Android emulators.

Installing the APK

Android has not had a global "Unknown Sources" switch since version 8. Permission is now granted per app, to whichever app opens the APK.

• Download the APK with your browser, then open it from the download notification or from your Files app.
• Android will say the app is not allowed to install unknown apps - tap Settings, switch on Allow from this source, then go back.
• Tap Install. If Play Protect asks to scan the app first, let it - VLC passes.
• Open VLC and grant it access to your media when asked, so it can build the Video and Audio libraries.
• On Android 7 or older, the switch is still global: Settings, then Security, then Unknown sources.

Take the APK from VideoLAN or from our download page only. Anything described as modded or "premium" is not VLC - there is no premium VLC to unlock.

Playing the File That Would Not Open Elsewhere

VLC opens on the Video tab, which lists every video it found on the device, grouped by folder. Tap a file and it plays.

The other four tabs along the bottom are Audio (music, sorted by artist, album and genre), Browse (the folder view, plus network shares and USB drives), Playlists and More, which holds Settings and About.

The files that produced a "format not supported" error in the stock player - MKV, HEVC, DTS and EAC3 audio, FLAC - play here because VLC ships its own decoders. There is no codec to install and no conversion step.

If a file is in the folder but missing from the Video tab, open Browse and navigate to it directly. VLC only indexes the folders it has permission for, and a card or USB drive added later needs a refresh from the Video tab's menu.

During playback, swipe up or down on the left edge for brightness, on the right edge for volume, and left or right across the middle to seek. Double-tap the left or right side of the screen to skip back or forward.

Subtitles, Audio Tracks and Sync

The subtitle control is the speech-bubble icon in the bottom-left corner of the player. Tap it and the Audio and Subtitles panel opens, with a list of every audio track and subtitle track inside the file.

For a subtitle file you already have, tap the three dots in the Subtitles pane and choose Select subtitle file, then browse to the SRT. A subtitle file with the same name as the video, in the same folder, loads automatically.

For a subtitle you do not have, the same menu offers Download subtitles. VLC searches by the file's name, so a cleanly named file finds a match faster than video_final2.mkv.

When the words arrive before or after the voices, tap the three dots in the Subtitles pane and choose Subtitle delay. Tap Voice heard the moment you hear a line, then Text seen when its subtitle appears, and VLC works out the offset for you.

Audio that is out of step with the picture is fixed the same way from the Options menu, the three dots in the bottom-right corner: choose Audio delay, then use Sound heard and Sound spotted. Subtitle size, colour and background are under More, then Settings, then Subtitles.

Speed, Sleep Timer, Equalizer and the Rest

Everything else lives behind that same Options button in the bottom-right corner of the player.

• Playback speed - a slider from 0.25x to 4x, useful for lectures and language practice.
• Sleep timer - stops playback after a set time, so a film does not run to the credits while you sleep.
• Equalizer - a 10-band equalizer with presets, off by default until you flip the switch at the top of its panel.
• A-B repeat - loops between two points you mark, which is the feature musicians and learners ask for most.
• Pop-up player - keeps the video in a floating window while you use other apps.
• Lock - disables every control and gesture so a pocket or a child cannot pause the film.

The screen-ratio icon next to Options cycles through best fit, fill, 16:9 and 4:3 for films that show black bars on your phone's screen.

Casting and Network Streams

The cast icon at the top of the library sends the current video to a Chromecast on the same Wi-Fi, and the Browse tab lists Windows shares, NAS boxes and UPnP servers on the network without any setup.

Who Should Look Elsewhere

VLC is free, so this is about fit. The tell is what your phone struggles with rather than what it plays.

If 4K HEVC stutters, the phone's hardware decoder is not being used - check More, Settings, Video, Hardware acceleration first, and our guide to playing HEVC files in VLC covers the rest.

If it still drops frames, mpv for Android renders more efficiently on weak hardware and is the better choice for AV1 on Android.

If you are used to MX Player and only miss its gestures, stay with it - but remember that MX needs the separate MX Player Custom Codec for DTS and AC3 audio, which VLC plays without an add-on.

If you are on a phone without Google services, run the APK through Play Store Check - VLC passes, because it does not depend on Play services at all.
