How to Reinstall Windows 11 Without a USB Stick: 3 Built-In Ways

You don't need a USB stick to reinstall Windows 11 - the Recovery page in Settings has three built-in ways to do it, and one of them even keeps your apps.

Open Settings > System > Recovery and start with the gentlest option that fixes your problem.

Here is which one to pick, what each one keeps, and the few cases where you still need a USB stick.

Which Option Should You Pick?

Option Keeps Use it when
Reinstall now Files, apps and settings Windows is buggy or slow, but you want everything back as it was
Reset PC, Keep my files Your files only A repair didn't help and you don't mind reinstalling apps
Reset PC, Remove everything Nothing You're selling or giving away the PC, or want a truly fresh start
Rebuild PC (Cloud rebuild) Nothing A reset fails, or Windows is too broken to repair itself

Back up first.

Copy anything important to an external drive or OneDrive before you start. Microsoft also suggests turning on Windows Backup under Settings > Accounts > Windows Backup, and keeping your BitLocker recovery key handy if your drive is encrypted.

1. Reinstall Now: Repair Windows and Keep Everything

This is the one most people should try first. Microsoft says it "reinstalls the same version of Windows already on your PC" and "preserves your apps, files, and settings."

  1. Open Recovery. Go to Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Find Fix problems using Windows Update. Select Reinstall now next to it.
  3. Let it run. Keep the PC plugged in and online - it downloads a fresh copy of your current Windows and restarts when it's ready.

Don't see it? It needs an up-to-date Windows 11, and it's hidden on PCs managed by a work or school.

2. Reset This PC: Keep Your Files or Wipe Everything

  1. Start the reset. In Settings > System > Recovery, select Reset PC.
  2. Choose what to keep. Keep my files removes apps and settings but keeps your documents and photos - Remove everything wipes it all.
  3. Choose Cloud download. It downloads a fresh copy of Windows with the latest updates, so no USB stick is needed.
  4. Confirm and wait. The screen can stay black for a long time - Microsoft says sometimes more than 15 minutes - so don't switch the PC off.

Local reinstall is the other choice. It uses files already on your PC, which is quicker on slow internet, but it may not include the latest updates.

3. Rebuild PC: The New Cloud Rebuild Option

Cloud rebuild is Microsoft's newest recovery option. It reinstalls Windows with "a fresh copy of Windows and drivers from Windows Update", so it can fix PCs where a normal reset keeps failing.

It removes all your files, apps and settings, so treat it as the last stop before a USB stick. If your PC has it, select Rebuild PC in Settings > System > Recovery.

Don't see Rebuild PC?

It's still rolling out and has been tested mainly in Insider builds, so many PCs don't have it yet. Use Reset PC with Cloud download instead - it's the closest option you already have.

If Windows Won't Start at All

After two or three failed starts, Windows opens the blue recovery screen by itself. Choose Troubleshoot > Reset this PC, or Troubleshoot > Cloud rebuild if it's listed.

You can also reach this screen from a working PC: go to Settings > System > Recovery and select Restart now next to Advanced startup.

When You Still Need a USB Stick

  • The recovery screen won't open or every option fails.
  • You've replaced the drive and there's no Windows on the PC at all.
  • The PC has no working internet in the recovery screen, so cloud options can't download.

For those cases, Rufus makes a bootable Windows 11 USB in a few clicks, and can download the official ISO for you. Our bootable USB guide compares it with Microsoft's own tool.

Fix PCs for friends and family? Ventoy lets you keep several ISO files on one stick and pick one at boot.

Quick questions

Can I reinstall Windows 11 without losing my files?

Yes. Reinstall now keeps your files, apps and settings, and Reset PC with Keep my files keeps your files but removes apps.

Does Reset this PC remove my apps?

Yes, both reset options remove the apps you installed. Only Reinstall now keeps them.

What is the difference between Cloud download and Cloud rebuild?

Cloud download is part of Reset this PC and can keep your files. Cloud rebuild wipes the drive and also downloads fresh drivers from Windows Update.

Do I need my Windows product key after a reset?

Usually not. A PC that was activated before reactivates by itself once it's online.

How long does a Windows 11 reset take?

It depends on your drive and internet speed, and it can take an hour or more. Keep the PC plugged in the whole time.

The bottom line

Try Reinstall now first, then Reset PC with Cloud download, and keep Rebuild PC for when nothing else works. Only reach for a USB stick when Windows can't start its own recovery.
