AMD Ryzen Chipset Drivers is AMD's official driver bundle for Ryzen and Threadripper motherboards, replacing the generic Windows drivers behind USB, power management, sleep and platform security with the ones AMD wrote for your chipset - free, and in one installer.

Windows sets up a new Ryzen PC with generic Microsoft drivers for most of the motherboard.

They work, but working is not the same as working properly.

USB devices drop out for a second and reconnect, laptops wake from sleep with the fan already spinning, and the processor never quite settles into the boost and idle behaviour AMD designed for it.

None of that is a hardware fault. It is Windows guessing at hardware it only half understands, and the official AMD chipset package is what stops the guessing.

Version 8.02.18.557 is a single 62.5 MB installer for 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11, and it covers everything from a 2017 A320 board to a current X870E or Threadripper workstation.

What the Package Actually Installs

This is not one big driver. It is roughly thirty small ones, each responsible for a single piece of the board, and the installer picks only the ones your system needs.

The processor power management and Ryzen power plan drivers are the ones most people feel. They tell Windows how your specific Ryzen chip boosts, which cores are the fastest, and how deeply it can idle, which is why a fresh install often runs cooler and quieter without losing speed.

On X3D processors there is also a 3D V-Cache Performance Optimizer driver, which helps Windows put games on the die with the large cache instead of scattering them across both.

The USB filter driver corrects how AMD's USB controllers announce themselves to the system, which is the usual cure for ports that disconnect at random. Worth knowing: AMD ships it for Windows 10 only, because Windows 11 handles that job in its own USB stack.

The Platform Security Processor (PSP) driver exposes the security engine built into Ryzen silicon, the part that handles encryption keys and the firmware TPM that Windows 11 asks for.

Laptops get the biggest share of the package: the S0i3 filter driver for modern standby, the Platform Management Framework drivers that balance power between CPU and graphics, and the sensor fusion drivers behind screen rotation and presence detection.

The rest is plumbing that nothing works without - PCI, SMBus, I2C, UART and GPIO2 drivers. These are what let fan control, RGB headers, front panel buttons and monitoring tools such as CPU-Z read the board at all.

Which Processors and Boards It Covers

On the chipset side the package supports A320, B350, X370, B450, X470, A520, B550, X570, B650, B650E, X670, X670E, B840, B850, X870 and X870E, plus the X399, TRX40, WRX80, TRX50 and WRX90 workstation platforms.

On the processor side it covers Ryzen 9000 and 8000G desktop chips, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, Ryzen 7000 desktop and mobile, Ryzen 5000 desktop, 2nd and 3rd Gen Ryzen desktop, the G-series chips with Radeon graphics, Ryzen AI 300 laptops, and Threadripper from the original 1000 series up to Threadripper PRO 9000.

One catch to check before you install. AMD lists first-generation Ryzen, Threadripper 1000 and 2000, Ryzen 2000G, Ryzen Mobile 2000U and 7th Gen A-Series as supported on Windows 10 only, so on those chips this driver set is a Windows 10 package.

If you are unsure what is actually in your machine, CPU-Z names the processor, chipset and memory in one window, and GPU-Z does the same for the graphics side.

How to Install It

  1. Close open programs and save your work, because the install ends in a restart.
  2. Get the installer and run it as administrator - Windows will ask for permission by itself.
  3. Let it detect your hardware. There is nothing to choose, it deploys only the components your chipset uses.
  4. Reboot when it asks. Skipping the restart leaves the USB and power components on the old drivers, which is how people end up thinking the update did nothing.

To confirm the install landed, Driver Store Explorer lists every chipset component separately in the Windows driver store, and it also clears out the older duplicates that pile up on a system carried through several Windows upgrades.

For the rest of the machine - network, audio, card readers - Snappy Driver Installer Origin handles the leftovers offline, without the paid nagging that most driver updaters come with.

Older Versions and the Downgrade Trap

The download page also keeps 7.04.09.545 and 6.07.22.037, plus 2.17.25.506 for the handful of Ryzen builds still on Windows 7.

Once you install a 7.x or 8.x chipset package, AMD's installer will refuse to install 6.x or older on top of it. To go back, uninstall the current version, delete the Qt_Dependencies folder in C:\Program Files (x86)\AMD\Chipset_Software\, then run the older installer.

Unless you are chasing a specific regression, stay on the newest version. The recent releases are mostly bug fixes to the security, power and laptop components, which is exactly the boring maintenance you want in a chipset driver.

Update the Graphics Driver at the Same Time

The chipset package covers the motherboard and the processor. It does not touch the GPU.

For a Radeon system, pair it with AMD Radeon Adrenalin Graphics Drivers, which carry the hardware decoders for H.264, HEVC and AV1 that your media player leans on for smooth 4K playback.

Plenty of Ryzen machines run a GeForce or Arc card instead, in which case the NVIDIA GeForce drivers or the Intel Graphics driver is the other half of the job.

When Video Still Stutters After the Update

A driver update occasionally leaves playback worse than it was, usually because hardware acceleration is now pointing somewhere different.

The Codec Troubleshooter walks you through the symptoms and tells you whether you are looking at a missing codec or an acceleration setting.

Players such as PotPlayer and MPC-HC decode through DXVA2 and D3D11, which run straight through the GPU driver, so a stale graphics driver shows up as stutter long before anything else does.

Turning hardware acceleration on in MPC-HC takes about a minute, and if HEVC files are the ones misbehaving, the HEVC playback troubleshooting guide works through the usual causes in order.

Tuning Once the System Is Stable

With the drivers in place, AMD Ryzen Master gives you the live view: temperature, clock speed and voltage per core, plus Precision Boost Overdrive limits and memory timings you can adjust.

Run it in that order, not the other way round. Ryzen Master reads its sensor data through the chipset drivers, so on an out-of-date install the numbers it shows you can simply be wrong.

If you encode video on the processor rather than the GPU, this is also where a correct power plan pays off. HandBrake and the x265 encoder will hold a higher all-core clock for longer, and the GPU encoding comparison is worth a read before you decide which one should do the work.

Finish With the Playback Side

Correct drivers get the hardware right. Windows still needs the decoders to open the files themselves.

The K-Lite Codec Pack is the usual one-shot answer on Windows 10 and 11, bundling LAV Filters, MPC-HC and the DirectShow pieces that cover nearly every format, and it hands decoding to the AMD hardware wherever it can.
