Elmedia Player is a Mac media player from Electronic Team that opens almost any video or audio file you give it, with no codec hunting.
The basic player is free, and it covers what most people need - playback, playlists, subtitles and audio sync.
Streaming to a TV, the equalizer and picture controls sit behind a paid PRO upgrade, which is the main thing to know before you install.
What Elmedia Player Actually Does
Think of it as the universal player the Mac never shipped with. QuickTime Player handles MP4 and MOV, but it gives up on MKV, AVI, WMV and older DivX or Xvid files - Elmedia opens those directly.
Everything it needs is built in, so there is no codec pack to install and nothing to configure. Version 8.24 runs on macOS 10.13 High Sierra or later, and it has been updated for macOS 26.

The free player is a real player, not a demo. What changes with PRO is everything around playback:

On the version from the developer's website, the free tier stops streaming to AirPlay, Chromecast and DLNA devices after 5 minutes. Treat it as a test that your TV works with Elmedia, not as free casting.

A file extension only tells you the wrapper, not what is inside it. If an MKV opens with no sound or a black picture, MKVToolNix for Mac shows you exactly which tracks it holds.
Elmedia plays VOB files from a ripped DVD folder, but it does not rip discs itself. For that part, use MakeMKV for Mac or Mac DVDRipper Pro.
What Changed in 8.24 - and the Releases Before It
The 8.24 update itself is small: it adds M4B audiobook support plus minor fixes. Most of the streaming fixes you will see credited to it actually landed over the three releases before, so here is where each one belongs:
- 8.24, December 2025. Support for M4B audiobook files, plus minor fixes and improvements.
- 8.23, September 2025. Compatibility with macOS 26, the Mac kept awake while streaming, and fixes for some AirPlay devices and the streaming device list - this release also raised the minimum to macOS 10.13.
- 8.22, June 2025. Fixes for crashes during streaming, Chromecast trouble with some videos, and pause not working mid-stream.
- 8.21, January 2025. Support for Roku devices running the latest Roku OS.
Streaming to Your TV - What PRO Buys You
With PRO, Elmedia sends video to Apple TV and AirPlay 2 devices, Chromecast, Roku and DLNA smart TVs, with 4K on Chromecast and Apple TV. The files stay on your Mac and the TV just shows them.
For many people this is the whole reason to pay. If you never cast anything, the free version may be all you ever need.
Who Should Look Elsewhere
If you want every feature free, with no upgrade prompt, the Mac has three strong players that cost nothing:
- VLC Media Player for Mac - plays nearly everything and has no paid tier at all.
- IINA for Mac - a modern, Mac-native player with Picture-in-Picture and picture controls included free.
- mpv player for Mac - minimal and fast, for people happy with keyboard shortcuts and config files.
The quick tell: if the PRO feature you want is Picture-in-Picture or brightness control, IINA already gives you both. If you want one-click casting to a Roku or a DLNA TV, that is where Elmedia PRO earns its price.
