Opera GX is Opera's free gaming browser for Windows, a Chromium build whose headline feature is GX Control, a panel that caps how much processor, memory and bandwidth the browser may use so it stops competing with your game.
Opera GX is a Chromium browser with a control panel bolted on, and the control panel is the reason to use it.
You set a ceiling on how much processor, memory and bandwidth the browser may take, and it stays under it while you play.
Everything else - the dark interface, the sounds, the gaming news feed - is decoration on top of that one idea.
What Opera GX Actually Does Differently
Under the skin this is the same engine as Chrome, so sites behave the same way and Chrome extensions install normally. What Opera adds is a settings panel called GX Control.
GX Control lets you cap three things: how much CPU the browser may use, how much RAM it may hold, and how much network bandwidth it may take. Set the limits, and a browser with thirty tabs open stops competing with your game for the machine.
That is a real fix for a real problem, and it is the one thing no other mainstream browser offers. If you have ever closed the browser before launching a game, this is aimed at you.

About That Free VPN
Opera calls it a VPN and most write-ups repeat that, but it is worth being precise because the difference matters.
What you get free is a proxy that covers traffic inside the browser only. Anything else on your PC - your game client, your launcher, any other program - keeps using your normal connection, which is exactly what a real VPN would not do.
The practical line. It is fine for hiding your address from a website or getting around a regional block on a page. It is not the thing to lean on if you need a connection genuinely protected end to end.
Opera also sells a paid tier called VPN Pro that does cover the whole device. The free one bundled here is not that, and the page you are on is about the free browser.
Mods, Themes and the Look
GX Mods is the customisation store, and it goes further than a theme usually does. A mod can change the colour scheme, the background, the click and hover sounds, and the animations the interface plays.
Some are tasteful and some are extremely loud. They install in a click and uninstall just as fast, so trying one costs nothing.
If that sounds like more personality than you want in a browser, Opera Browser is the same company's ordinary version with the sidebar and the ad blocker but none of the gaming styling.
Who Should Look Elsewhere
The tell is simple: open GX Control and look at the sliders. If you have no intention of ever moving them, you are installing a themed Chrome, and the theme is the whole of what you gain.
For a plain fast browser, Brave blocks ads by default without the styling, and Firefox is the mainstream option that is not Chromium at all.

Worth knowing on the resource question: Microsoft Edge has its own sleeping-tabs and efficiency mode, which solves part of the same problem without a second browser to install.
Video, Streaming and What Your Machine Can Decode
Being Chromium-based, Opera GX plays the same web video Chrome does, AV1 and VP9 included, and it will use your graphics card for that where the hardware supports it.
