Another solution would be to put the game on the ffdshow blacklist. See K-Lite FAQ.

Used it since years with XP, very stable and comfortable , but version 3.57 crashed with Silent Hunter 4 1.4. I hab all the latest Nvidia/XP-patches, but the main menu of the game stayed black. I almost got nuts. In the game-forum I found a tread, where they recommended to uninstall K-Lite Codec pack as a last measure (http://forums.ubi .com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/6921019045/m/2021017016?r=2021017016#2021017016).
It helped immediately. Dunno why, but in case someone has the same problem...

Couldn't hear a .avi file and couldn't find the sound codec....d/l K-Lite Codec Pack and everything is fine. Thank you guys (and girls) for making it freeware.

Great product - valuable codecs, the media player classic has come in handy more than once too.

Commenter #194: By your own admission it wasn't k-lite that caused the problem, Dell's only advice really would be to uninstall ALL the codecs you loaded and, if nothing works, reinstall the OS.
By and large, the majority of the issues here are people not customising the codecs they actually need. More than once have I overwritten codecs with K-Lite's list, only to have problems which necessitated getting a copy of the older ones back, I had this with the Indeo video codecs once ages ago... Bear in mind you will rarely need the FULL installation and having all those codecs may cause more issues than if you just ONLY ADD THE ONES YOU ACTUALLY NEED!

Always an amazing product. Truly does run 99% of videos you can come across. Also many configurable options for movies while playing.

is there no such thing as FREEware any more? you still have to pay for it, even though all the sights that direct me to it are free sights. can i not find a free dvd player for my computer anywhere.
