LAV Filters Megamix is a free Windows codec pack that bundles LAV Filters with a choice of MPC-HC or a slimmed PotPlayer, the madVR renderer and two subtitle filters, letting you install only the parts of the playback chain you want.
Most codec packs decide for you and hope you do not notice.
Megamix does the opposite: it hands you the parts of a playback chain and lets you tick the ones you want.
That is genuinely better if you know what the parts do, and genuinely worse if you do not, so here is what each one is for.
What Is Actually in the Pack
Eight components, and you are not meant to install all of them. The third column is the decision.

The last two are downloaded during setup rather than carried in the installer, so they need a working connection at the time you install.
One setting will break interlaced playback. Do not enable the D3D11 native decoding mode in LAV Video Decoder if you play interlaced video, or if you use madVR's super-low-end DXVA scalers preset. The two combinations are known to misbehave, and the symptom looks like a broken file rather than a wrong setting, which is why people chase it for hours.
Install Only What You Need
This is the advice that matters most and it is worth being specific about, because "install fewer codecs" on its own is not actionable.
DirectShow picks a filter for each file by merit and priority. When two packs are installed, they register competing filters for the same formats, and Windows resolves the conflict differently depending on which program is asking.
The symptom is distinctive: the same file plays in one player and fails in another on the same machine, or playback works until an update reshuffles the priorities.
Do not run this alongside another codec pack. If you already have the K-Lite Codec Pack or the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack installed, uninstall it before running this one.
The same goes for X Codec Pack or any other bundle. Pick one and commit to it, because running two is the most common self-inflicted playback problem there is.

A Word About madVR
madVR is the reason a lot of people install this pack, and it deserves an honest paragraph rather than a superlative.
It is still excellent. Its scaling algorithms and tone mapping remain a visible step above the default renderer on a good display, and nothing about it has stopped working.
It is also effectively in maintenance. The last public build is a test build from early 2026, and its developer's attention moved to dedicated hardware years ago rather than the PC version.
The practical consequence is HDR. MPC Video Renderer is actively developed, handles HDR at least as well, and supports Dolby Vision, which madVR does not.
So: madVR if you are chasing maximum image quality on SDR content and enjoy tuning it. MPC Video Renderer if you have HDR or Dolby Vision material and want something still being worked on.
System Requirements
Two prerequisites, and one thing worth knowing before you click.
- DirectX End-User Runtime. The legacy redistributable, not the DirectX version built into Windows.
- Microsoft .NET Framework 4 or later. Present on every supported version of Windows already.
The download is around 189 MB, which is roughly three times the size of a mainstream codec pack. That is not bloat: it is two players and a high-end renderer travelling in one installer.
Who Should Look Elsewhere
The tell is whether you want to make these choices at all. Megamix presents you with a component list and expects you to know which parts you need, and there is no shame in not wanting that.
If you want playback fixed without a decision tree, the K-Lite Codec Pack has sensible presets and installs LAV Filters underneath anyway. You get most of the same engine with none of the choosing.
If you only want files to open and do not care about system-wide codecs, install a player that carries its own. VLC Media Player and mpv player both need nothing registered on your system.
If you already have a player you like and only want better decoding behind it, skip the pack entirely and take LAV Filters on its own. It is a few megabytes and it is the part that does the actual work.
And if you want the enthusiast build rather than the bundle, MPC-BE paired with LAV Filters and MPC Video Renderer is the combination most people end up at. ffdshow still has a following for its post-processing filters, though it is long past its prime.
Quick questions
Is LAV Filters Megamix free?
Yes, and so is everything in it. It is a bundle of free components with an installer that lets you choose which ones to register.
Can I install it alongside K-Lite?
No, and this is the one rule worth following. Two codec packs register competing DirectShow filters for the same formats, and the result is playback that works in one program and fails in another. Uninstall one first.
Do I need to install all of it?
Not remotely. LAV Filters is the only part you always want. Everything else is there so you can take it or leave it, and leaving things out is the intended way to use this.
Megamix or plain LAV Filters?
Plain LAV Filters if you already have a player you like and just want better decoding. Megamix if you also want a player, a renderer and subtitle filters chosen to work together.
Is madVR still worth installing?
For SDR image quality, yes. For HDR or Dolby Vision, MPC Video Renderer is the better answer now and is still actively developed, while madVR has been in maintenance for some time.
Why is the download 189 MB?
Because it carries two complete video players and a high-end renderer, not just codecs. You will not install all of it, but the installer arrives with everything on offer.
