Canva has launched Craft, its first home-made AI image generator, and every Canva user can try it for free.

You type what you want, and Craft draws it at up to 2K resolution - including readable text in 55 languages. Canva announced it on 22 October in its Craft launch post.
One thing first: despite the name, it has nothing to do with PhotoCraft, the free photo editor many of you downloaded this month.
What Canva Craft Can Do
- Plans before it draws. One part of the model plans the layout - where things go, how big, where the text sits - and a second part paints the image.
- Designed for designs. It learned from millions of Canva templates, so posters, cards and social posts are its home ground.
- Text that reads properly. Write your prompt in any language, and Craft can put lettering in 55 of them.
- More than 30 shapes. Square, story, banner and more, or type your own size.
- Editable results. Split an image into layers with Magic Layers, or change one element without redrawing the rest.
How to Try It
Open Canva in your browser or the free Canva for Windows app. Go to Dream Lab (from the home page, choose More, then Dream Lab).
Type a prompt and press Generate. You get four options to pick from, then you can ask for changes, edit parts of the image or boost the resolution.
How much is free?
Each image uses your plan's AI allowance, and free accounts get a smaller one than paid plans. Canva hasn't said exactly how many images that is, so check your allowance before starting a big project.
Canva Craft vs PhotoCraft - Which Do You Need?
The names are close, but the jobs are opposite.
- Canva Craft makes new pictures from words. It runs inside Canva, needs an account and an internet connection, and counts against your AI allowance.
- PhotoCraft edits photos you already have, with layers, masks and object removal. It's free, open source and runs on your PC, with no account. It's still an early version, though.
PhotoCraft belongs to the open-source Craft family we covered in free AI-built Photoshop and Premiere alternatives. For a mature free editor that's been around for decades, GIMP is the safe pick.
