Midvid JPEG Video Codec is a small 2004 Windows video codec that compresses each frame of a video as a JPEG picture.

It has not been updated since 2004, so treat it as a tool for opening old files rather than for new projects.

For new editing and archiving work, a maintained lossless codec such as Ut Video Codec Suite does the job better and keeps every pixel.

What Midvid JPEG Actually Does

The codec takes 24-bit or 32-bit RGB video and stores every frame as its own JPEG image, with 24-bit output. A quality setting trades file size against detail, much like saving a photo as a JPEG.

Because each frame stands alone, cutting and seeking are easy, which is why this style of codec was popular for editing and capture. The price is size: the files are far bigger than modern delivery formats at the same quality.

Despite how older descriptions read, it is not a photo tool. It does nothing for RAW camera files or for shrinking a folder of pictures, it only compresses video.

Who Can Still Use It

The one real use left is opening old videos that were saved with it. If a file from the mid-2000s shows a black picture or a missing codec error, installing Midvid on a matching older setup may let you open it.

Once it plays, re-save it straight away in a maintained format so you are not stuck with it again. VirtualDub2 is the usual tool for that, and MediaInfo shows which codec a mystery file was made with.

Who Should Look Elsewhere

The tell is simple: if you are starting a new recording, edit or archive, you should not be choosing a 2004 codec. Anyone on 64-bit editing software is also likely out of luck, because codecs from this period were built for 32-bit programs.

What to Use Instead

For lossless intermediate files that edit smoothly, the site hosts several codecs that keep the picture identical to the source:

• MagicYUV - a speed-focused lossless codec built for 4K and multi-core CPUs.
• Lagarith - frozen since 2011, but still widely used and good on static scenes.
• HuffYUV - the original lossless capture codec from the same era as Midvid, kept for compatibility.

If you need lossless files without installing anything into Windows, FFmpeg writes Ut Video and FFV1 directly. For ordinary Motion JPEG clips from cameras and webcams, LAV Filters handles playback in any DirectShow player.
