GeForce NOW lets you play big PC games on a modest laptop, a Mac or a phone, because the game actually runs on NVIDIA's servers.
You bring games you already own on Steam, Epic, Ubisoft Connect and other stores, and the app streams them to your screen like a video.
The app is free, and there is a free tier, but the paid memberships are where it becomes truly playable.
How Cloud Gaming Works
A powerful gaming PC in an NVIDIA data centre runs the game. It sends you a video stream of the picture, and sends your key presses and controller moves back to the game.
Your own device only has to show video, so a basic laptop can play something as demanding as Cyberpunk 2077. The catch is that everything depends on your internet connection.
Which Games You Can Play
GeForce NOW does not sell games. You link your accounts on Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Ubisoft Connect, the EA app, Battle.net or Xbox PC Game Pass, and play the supported games you already own.
More than 4,000 games are supported. Free-to-play titles such as Fortnite need no purchase, and paid members also get Install-to-Play, which adds many more Steam games whose publishers allow it.
Not every game is there:
Publishers decide whether their games can be streamed. Check that a game is supported before you buy it just to play on GeForce NOW.
Free, Performance or Ultimate
| Tier | Price (US) | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | One-hour sessions at up to 1080p and 60 fps on basic servers, with waiting in a queue at busy times |
| Performance | $9.99 a month | Six-hour sessions, up to 1440p, RTX graphics, priority access and Install-to-Play |
| Ultimate | $19.99 a month | Eight-hour sessions on the fastest RTX 5080-class servers, up to 5K at 120 fps or 360 fps at 1080p |
Yearly plans cost less per month, and prices differ by country.
The 100-hour monthly limit:
Since January 2026, Performance and Ultimate include 100 hours of play per billing month, with up to 15 unused hours carried over. Extra hours come in 15-hour packs, and older Founders memberships are exempt while they stay active.
For most people, 100 hours is more than a month of evening play. The quickest way to judge it is to start on the free tier, then try a month of Performance before committing to a year.
What Your Internet Needs
Speed matters, but so does a steady, quick connection to the nearest NVIDIA data centre. NVIDIA suggests wired Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi rather than older 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
- 1080p at 60 fps. About 25 Mbps.
- 1440p at 120 fps. About 35 Mbps.
- 4K at 120 fps. About 45 Mbps, and around 65 Mbps for 5K.
The app runs a network test when you first open it and picks settings to match. If the picture turns blocky or controls feel delayed, lower the resolution before blaming the service.
Devices and Download
The GeForce NOW download page has the Windows app and the Mac version. There are also apps for Android phones and TVs, and it plays in a browser on iPhone, iPad and Chromebooks.
You do not even need the app on a PC, because GeForce NOW also runs in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, though the Windows app gives the best picture and controller support.
On laptops, keeping the graphics driver current helps the video stream decode smoothly. Intel owners can update with Intel Graphics Driver or Intel Graphics Software.
If you would rather update every driver in one pass, IObit Driver Booster finds the outdated ones for you.
Who Should Look Elsewhere
The tell is your connection. On slow, shared or mobile internet, streamed games stutter, and fast competitive shooters feel the delay first.
If you already own an NVIDIA graphics card, play locally and keep it tuned with the NVIDIA App. Its recording uses the card's built-in NVENC encoder, the same kind of hardware that compresses the GeForce NOW stream.
To record or stream your cloud sessions to Twitch or YouTube, OBS Studio captures the GeForce NOW window like any other game. Gamers who prefer a browser built around gaming can try Opera GX.
The Other Tools category has more everyday Windows utilities.
Quick questions
Is GeForce NOW free?
The app and a free tier are. Free sessions last one hour at up to 1080p, with queues at busy times. Paid tiers start at $9.99 a month.
Do I have to buy my games again?
No. You link the stores where you already own games, such as Steam or Epic, and play the supported ones from your library.
Is there a playtime limit?
Paid tiers include 100 hours a month since January 2026, with up to 15 hours rolling over. Free sessions are limited to one hour each.
Does it work on a Mac?
Yes. There is a Mac app, and Windows games you own play through it, since they run on NVIDIA's servers.
What internet speed do I need?
At least 25 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, more for higher resolutions, plus a steady, low-delay connection. Wired or 5 GHz Wi-Fi works best.
