Can You Watch DStv on IPTV? The Legal Way to Stream DStv on Any Device

You can't add DStv channels to an IPTV player - but you can stream every channel you pay for, legally, in the DStv Stream app.

It's one of the most common questions under our free IPTV playlist guide.

DStv is MultiChoice's pay-TV service, the biggest in Africa, sold by satellite dish and now by streaming too.

Its channels are paid and encrypted, so any 'DStv M3U' list you find is an unlicensed copy.

The official app does what those lists promise, on phones, computers and most smart TVs.

Why there's no legal DStv M3U link

An M3U playlist is a plain text file that lists stream addresses, one line per channel, and holds no video of its own. Your player reads the list and fetches each channel from wherever it points.

MultiChoice doesn't publish its channels that way, so a DStv playlist can only exist if someone is restreaming them without permission.

Those lists tend to stop working within days, and selling or using them is exactly what broadcasters are now chasing. Our guide on how to tell a real IPTV service from a pirate one explains the risks.

DStv Stream: the legal way to watch DStv over the internet

DStv Stream is MultiChoice's own app, with more than 10 million installs on Google Play. If you already pay for DStv, streaming is included at no extra cost.

You don't need a decoder any more either. Streaming-only packages exist, and even without a subscription the app offers a selection of free live channels once you sign up.

In South Africa, new packages started on 17 September 2026. These are the streaming-only prices:

Package Streaming per month Pick it if
EasyView R30 You only want the basics
Starter R99 You want local shows and one Premier League match a week
Select R299 You want PSL football, Mzansi Magic and kids channels
Sports R399 You want every Premier League and UEFA game, cricket, UFC and WWE
Movies & Series R500 You want M-Net and the movie channels
Premium R799 You want everything, including Springbok rugby and Formula 1

Every package can now be split with another person, which halves your share. Prices and packages differ in Nigeria, Kenya and other countries, so check DStv's site for yours.

Which devices work

DStv's own compatibility list covers these:

  • Phones and tablets. Android 8.0 or newer, and iPhone or iPad on iOS 15 or newer.
  • Smart TVs. Samsung (Tizen 4.0+), LG (webOS 4.0+), Hisense (VIDAA U3+) and certified Android TV 8.0+.
  • Other screens. Apple TV (4th generation, tvOS 15+), Xbox, and any laptop or PC through the website.
  • DStv's own boxes. The Streama and the Explora Ultra.

The catch with cheap Android boxes.

The app only runs on Play Protect certified devices. Many low-cost Android TV boxes aren't certified, which is why the app won't show up in their store or refuses to play.

How to check if your Android box is certified

  1. Open the Google Play Store. If there's no Play Store at all, the box isn't certified.
  2. Go to Settings, then About. On most devices this shows a line called Play Protect certification.
  3. Read the status. 'Device is certified' means DStv Stream should work, 'uncertified' means it won't.

If your box isn't certified, use the DStv Stream app built into a Samsung, LG or Hisense TV, a certified streaming stick, or cast from your phone.

How to start streaming

  1. Install DStv Stream from your device's official store. On a computer, use the DStv website instead.
  2. Sign in or sign up. Existing customers use their DStv Connect ID, new users can pick a streaming package.
  3. Register the device. You can add up to five devices to one account.
  4. Pick a channel. Live TV, catch-up and downloads all follow the package you pay for.

Streaming only works inside the countries DStv serves, so the app won't play live TV if you travel outside them.

Skip the 'DStv mod APK' downloads.

Modified versions promising free premium channels are pirate copies and a common way to get malware. If you've already got an APK from somewhere, check it with our APK Checker before installing.

Free South African channels for your IPTV player

If you want South African channels in an IPTV player anyway, the free-to-air streams collected by the iptv-org project are the legal option. Add this address as a playlist:

https://iptv-org.github.io/iptv/countries/za.m3u

It works in TiviMate and VLC Media Player. You won't find SuperSport or M-Net in it, only channels that broadcasters stream for free.

Public streams go offline often, so run the list through our M3U Checker first and keep only the working channels.

Quick questions

Is there a DStv M3U playlist?

Not a legal one. MultiChoice doesn't publish its channels as a playlist, so any DStv M3U list is an unlicensed restream.

Can I watch DStv Stream without a decoder?

Yes. DStv sells streaming-only packages, and the app has some free live channels you can watch after signing up.

Can I add DStv to TiviMate or another IPTV player?

No. DStv only streams through its own app and website. An IPTV player can still open free public playlists like the one above.

Why won't the DStv app install on my Android box?

The box is probably not Play Protect certified. DStv Stream isn't available on uncertified Android devices.

Does DStv Stream work outside Africa?

Live TV and catch-up are geo-blocked to the countries DStv serves. Check DStv's help pages before you travel.

How many devices can I use?

You can register up to five devices on one account. DStv says you can watch on your TV and stream on up to two other devices at the same time.

The bottom line

Skip the DStv playlists and use the DStv Stream app - it's legal, it works on most screens, and there's now a streaming plan from R30.
