If Your App Store Has No DeepSeek

DeepSeek publishes no Windows or macOS installer, so every executable advertised as one comes from somebody other than DeepSeek.

Running DeepSeek on Your Own Machine

DeepSeek publishes its model weights openly, and that is the part of the story the privacy headlines buried.

A local copy answers from your own hardware, so nothing you type leaves the room, there is no account, and no regional store removal can reach you.

The catch is size. Tools such as Ollama and LM Studio reduce the install to a single command, but the full V4 models want server hardware.

What runs on an ordinary laptop is a smaller distilled version, which is noticeably less capable than the app and still useful for drafting, summarising and straightforward code.

So Is It Worth It

For general questions, coding help and first drafts, yes. It is good, it is free with no tier to be nudged into, and that combination is genuinely rare.

The cost is not money. Your prompts and chat history are stored on servers in China, and Chinese law obliges companies there to assist state security agencies on request.

It also declines politically sensitive subjects, which is a regulatory guardrail rather than a fault in the model, and it is not something a setting will turn off.

Who Should Look Elsewhere

The tell is simple: if you would not be comfortable emailing the same text to a stranger, do not paste it into any hosted assistant, this one included.

That rules it out for client work under contract, patient or student records, unreleased code and anything covered by an employer's data policy.

ChatGPT and Grok keep your data under United States jurisdiction, which is a different set of trade-offs rather than an absence of them.

Perplexity is the pick when you need answers with sources attached, and it hosts DeepSeek's open model on Western servers if the model rather than the app is what you wanted.
