Windows 11 Will Use Less RAM - What It Means for Your 8GB PC

Microsoft is putting Windows 11 on a memory diet, and 8GB PCs are the ones it is aiming at.

The reason is refreshingly blunt: RAM has become expensive, so Microsoft wants Windows itself to need less of it.

Some of the work has already arrived with the 26H2 update, and the rest is due over the coming months.

Here is what is changing, who will notice, and the free fixes that help an 8GB PC today.

What Microsoft Actually Said

In July, Microsoft added "Memory optimization for 8GB and above" to its official list of Windows quality goals on the Windows Insider blog, with the stated aim of "reducing Windows memory footprint".

What Is Getting Lighter

  • The memory allocator - the part of Windows that hands out memory is being swapped for a more efficient one, which trims the overhead every app pays.
  • WinUI 3 - the toolkit behind the newer Windows 11 screens, which Microsoft says is getting "substantial improvements in memory efficiency".
  • WebView2 - the built-in Edge engine that apps like Weather, Widgets and the new Outlook quietly run inside, so each one carries a slice of a web browser.
  • Everyday speed - faster launches for Start, File Explorer, Search and Snipping Tool, plus quicker start-up and sign-in.

What Microsoft has not given is a number. There is no target and no before-and-after, so read "less RAM" as a direction rather than a promise of a specific saving.

Is Any of It Here Yet?

Some of it. Windows 11 26H2, rolling out now, bundles a Low Latency Profile that briefly runs the processor at full speed so Start, Search and apps open faster.

Windows Latest also reports that its 16GB test laptop dropped from about 10GB to 7GB of memory in use at start-up after the update - a change Microsoft has not announced. If you have not updated yet, here is how to get the 26H2 update.

The rest of the memory work is still being tested by Windows Insiders and is due to arrive through regular updates. Microsoft has not said which update brings which piece.

Who Will Notice the Difference

  • 8GB laptops and budget PCs - Microsoft's stated target, and the machines that stutter with a browser, a chat app and a video open at once.
  • 16GB PCs - a smaller gain, but more headroom for games, photo editing and lots of browser tabs.
  • 4GB PCs - still Windows 11's official minimum, but Microsoft only promises work for "8GB and above", so do not expect miracles.

Free Ways to Make 8GB Go Further Today

You do not have to wait for Microsoft. On a typical home PC, the apps you choose use far more memory than Windows itself, and that part is entirely in your hands.

  • See what is eating it - press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, open Processes and click the Memory column to sort the hungriest apps to the top.
  • Swap to a light video player - MPC-HC opens instantly, uses very little memory and plays HEVC and AV1 without a codec pack.
  • Swap to a light music player - foobar2000 stays small and responsive even with a huge library, on laptops that struggle with heavier players.
  • Free up memory in one click - the Boost button in Microsoft PC Manager clears temporary files and closes background processes, and it is Microsoft's own free tool.
  • Trim start-up apps - open Settings > Apps > Startup and switch off anything you do not need the moment Windows starts.

The quick win:

Watching a downloaded film in a browser tab or a heavy app on an 8GB laptop? Open the file in a lightweight player instead, and the difference in smoothness is often bigger than any Windows update will bring.

Quick questions

Will Windows 11 really use less RAM?

Microsoft has made it an official goal and named the parts it is working on. It has not published any figures, though, so the size of the saving is still unknown.

When will the changes arrive?

Microsoft said the work starts rolling out this autumn. Some speed improvements are already in 26H2, and the rest will come through regular Windows updates with no fixed dates.

Is 8GB of RAM still enough for Windows 11?

For browsing, office work, music and video playback, yes. For gaming, video editing or dozens of browser tabs at once, 16GB is far more comfortable.

Do RAM cleaner apps actually help?

They give short-term relief by closing background processes, but Windows refills free memory quickly. Closing or replacing the heaviest apps does more, and Microsoft PC Manager is the safe, official option if you want a one-click button.

What is msedgewebview2.exe in Task Manager?

It is the Edge engine that apps such as Weather, Widgets and the new Outlook run inside. It is safe, and its memory use drops when you close the app that started it.

The cheapest RAM upgrade is still a lighter app.
