Dolby Audio Extensions is Microsoft's free decoder for Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus and the Atmos layer inside it, restoring surround sound in Windows' own media apps on any PC after Windows 11 24H2 dropped the AC-3 codec.
A film that plays with a picture and no sound on a freshly installed Windows 11 24H2 PC is usually missing exactly one thing, and this is it.
Microsoft stopped shipping the Dolby Digital decoder with 24H2, so Media Player, Films and TV and the Store streaming apps lost the ability to play AC-3 soundtracks on a clean install.
Dolby Audio Extensions is Microsoft's own package that puts it back, and it is free.
What Dolby Audio Extensions Actually Does
It is a codec, not an app. There is no icon, no window and no settings screen, and once installed it sits inside Windows' media pipeline waiting for a Dolby soundtrack to arrive.
It decodes three things: Dolby Digital (AC-3), the format on DVDs, older rips and most broadcast recordings; Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC-3), the format Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video use; and the Dolby Atmos object layer that rides inside Dolby Digital Plus.
It can also pass the untouched bitstream through to an AV receiver over HDMI or optical, so a surround system still gets the real thing rather than a downmix.
The important limit. This registers with Windows' own Media Foundation pipeline, so it helps Media Player, Films and TV, Photos, Edge and Microsoft Store apps. It does nothing for VLC, MPC-HC, MPC-BE, PotPlayer or Kodi, because those carry their own decoders and never asked Windows for one.
The Windows 11 24H2 Change
In 2024 Microsoft removed the built-in AC-3 codec from Windows 11 24H2. A PC upgraded from an earlier build keeps the old decoder and carries on working, which is why the problem seems random.
A clean install, a reset, or a new PC that shipped on 24H2 has no AC-3 decoder at all. The tell is Media Player popping up a message about a missing Dolby codec the moment you open a file with a Dolby Digital track.
This package is the replacement for what went missing. If the missing track is Dolby Digital Plus rather than plain Dolby Digital, the Dolby Digital Plus Decoder for PC OEMs is Dolby's own equivalent and either one will do.
How to Install It
The download is an .appx package, the format Microsoft Store apps use, not a setup program. On Windows 10 and 11 you can double-click it and App Installer takes over.
If App Installer is missing or refuses, open PowerShell as administrator, change into the folder holding the file, and run Add-AppxPackage .\Microsoft_DolbyAudioExtensions_1_0_61521_0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe.appx. It is the same PowerShell method used for the HEVC extensions.
No reboot is needed, but close and reopen any player that was already running, because apps read the available decoders when they start.
Check whether you already have it. Run Get-AppxPackage *DolbyAudioExtensions* in PowerShell. A result means it is installed, and a second copy will not help.
Who Should Look Elsewhere
The tell is which player is silent. If the problem is in VLC Media Player or MPC-HC, this package will not touch it, and you do not need it to, because both decode Dolby Digital on their own.
For those players the decoder that matters is LAV Filters, or the K-Lite Codec Pack that bundles it with MPC-HC and configures everything. A silent Dolby track in either one usually points at an output device set to stereo or at passthrough sending a bitstream the receiver cannot read.

And if every app on the PC is silent, including the Windows startup sound, the audio driver is gone rather than a codec. Start with Realtek HD Audio Codecs for onboard sound, or your laptop maker's driver page, before installing anything on this page.
Not a fix for total silence. A review here reports that Windows "took out all sound" and this did not help, which is expected, because a decoder only affects Dolby-encoded tracks in Windows apps. When nothing at all plays, it is a driver problem.

Is Dolby Audio Extensions free?
Yes. It is published by Microsoft, costs nothing, and has no trial, no account and no purchase attached to it.
Do I need Dolby hardware or the Dolby Access app?
No. It is a software decoder that installs on any 64-bit or 32-bit PC running Windows 10 build 17763 or later. Dolby Access is a separate headphone product.
Will it fix Dolby audio in VLC or MPC-HC?
No, and those players do not need it. They decode Dolby Digital internally. If they are silent, look at the output device, passthrough settings or LAV Filters instead.
Does it work on Windows 10?
Yes, from version 1809 (build 17763) onward. Windows 10 still ships its own AC-3 decoder, so most Windows 10 machines will not notice a difference.
Is this the same as the Dolby Digital Plus Decoder for PC OEMs?
They overlap. Dolby's OEM decoder covers Dolby Digital Plus; this Microsoft package covers plain Dolby Digital as well as Digital Plus and the Atmos layer. On a clean 24H2 install this one is the more complete fix.
Why does the download not have a setup program?
Because it is packaged as a Store app. Double-click the .appx on Windows 10 or 11, or install it from PowerShell with Add-AppxPackage.
