K-Lite Codec Pack Basic is the smallest variant of the K-Lite family, installing the decoders that let Windows and any DirectShow program read almost any video or audio file, with no media player bundled and no change to your file associations.
Sometimes you want the file to play without another media player appearing on the taskbar and claiming every video on the drive.
That is what Basic is for: the decoders on their own, no player, 21.5 MB.

What Basic Actually Fixes
Basic installs the decoding components that Windows itself is missing, system-wide. Anything on your PC that uses DirectShow can then read the formats it could not read before.
In practice that means File Explorer starts showing thumbnails for MKV and MP4 files instead of blank icons, and programs that refused an import or played video with no sound start working.
It also means your existing player keeps its job. Basic ships no player, so nothing takes over your file associations.
What Is Inside Basic
- LAV Filters - the splitter and the video and audio decoders that do the actual work. H.264, HEVC, VP9, AV1, MPEG-2, plus AC3, DTS, TrueHD, AAC, FLAC and the rest, with hardware acceleration where your GPU supports it.
- Icaros Shell Extensions - video thumbnails in File Explorer, and file properties like duration and resolution for formats Windows normally ignores.
- Codec Tweak Tool - a small utility for seeing and managing what is registered on your system, useful long after installation.
What Is Not Inside It
- No media player. MPC-HC and the MPC Video Renderer arrive with the Standard variant.
- No encoders. The VFW and ACM codecs that old editing and capture software asks for are a Mega feature.
- No developer tools. GraphStudioNext and the extra DirectShow filters come with Full.
None of that changes which files you can play. Codec Guide is explicit that Basic already handles practically everything, and the larger variants add tools rather than formats.
Basic or Standard?
One question decides it: do you already have a media player you are happy with?
If yes, take Basic. If no, take Standard, which is the same decoders plus MPC-HC and the HDR-capable renderer, at 39.2 MB instead of 21.3 MB.
There is no format you gain by choosing Standard, and nothing you lose by choosing Basic. The main K-Lite Codec Pack page compares the whole family if you want the wider view.
When Basic Is the Right Pick
- You use VLC or MPC-BE already and only want to fix everything else on the system.
- File Explorer shows blank icons where video thumbnails should be.
- A video editor, converter or capture program rejects a file that plays fine elsewhere.
- You are setting up an old or low-spec PC and want the smallest install that still plays modern formats.
- You are working through someone else's computer and do not want to change how they open their videos.
Installing It
It is a single 21.5 MB installer, and the defaults are sensible enough to click straight through. Even in this small variant the component list is customisable, so you can skip the thumbnail extensions if you do not want them.
The installer also scans for broken codecs and for other codec packs, and can remove more than a hundred of them. That clean-up is often the real fix when playback has degraded after years of installing things.
Uninstalling reverses everything, registry keys included. If you are not sure what your file needs in the first place, our Codec Finder will tell you before you install anything.
What Changed in 19.9.0

Basic gets a shorter changelog than the other variants for a simple reason: most K-Lite releases are driven by player and renderer updates, and Basic contains neither.
Already have it installed? Run the new installer over the top. The separate update pack stopped at 19.8.8 because none was published for 19.9.0.
Who Should Look Elsewhere
If you want the decoders and genuinely nothing else, LAV Filters on its own is smaller still. You lose the thumbnail extensions, the tweak tool and the automatic clean-up of old codecs, which for most people is worth the extra megabytes.
LAV Filters Megamix goes the other way, bundling the same filters with a choice of players. Shark007 Codecs is the other maintained pack worth knowing about.
The tell that a codec pack is the wrong answer: the only thing you want to do is watch one file. Install VLC, play it, move on. Packs earn their place when the problem is spread across Windows rather than sitting in one player.

Quick questions
Does Basic play fewer formats than the bigger variants?
No. All four variants share the same decoders. Standard, Full and Mega add a player, developer tools and encoders, not extra formats.
Will it change my default video player?
No. Basic includes no player at all, so your current one keeps every file association.
Do I need the 64-bit pack too?
No. Current versions install both 32-bit and 64-bit codecs from one installer. The old K-Lite Codec Pack 64-bit stopped at 9.9.9 and is archive material.
Why are my videos still missing thumbnails?
The thumbnail component is optional during setup, so it may have been skipped. Reinstall with Icaros selected, and if Explorer still shows blank icons, clear the thumbnail cache in Disk Cleanup.
Will HEVC files play in the Windows Photos app?
Not from this pack. Photos and Media Player use Media Foundation rather than DirectShow, so they need the Media Foundation codecs instead, and our HEVC troubleshooting guide covers the rest.
A file plays but has no sound. Will Basic fix that?
