K-Lite Codec Pack Full is the Standard variant plus madVR, an advanced video renderer for high-quality upscaling and HDR tone mapping, which makes it the right choice for desktop machines with a capable graphics card and unnecessary for everyone else.
Full is the Standard pack plus one extra component, and that component is madVR.

What Full Adds Over Standard
One thing: madVR 0.92.17, an advanced video renderer. Everything else in the two variants is identical, component for component and version for version.
That is worth stating plainly, because the difference is often described as extra subtitle filters and extra audio decoders. It is not. DirectVobSub and the LAV audio decoder ship in every variant, right down to Basic.
So Full plays exactly the same files as Standard. What it can do differently is draw them.
What madVR Is For
A renderer is the last step in playback: the decoder turns the file into frames, and the renderer puts those frames on your screen. madVR does that step with much more care than the default.
Its strengths are upscaling algorithms for watching lower-resolution video on a big display, better chroma upsampling, and HDR tone mapping with fine manual control. On good hardware the difference is visible, particularly on DVD-era and 720p material stretched to a 4K panel.
The cost is GPU load. madVR can push a modest graphics card hard enough to drop frames, and its default settings are conservative for exactly that reason.
If you are on a laptop with integrated graphics, the MPC Video Renderer in Standard is the better tool. It handles HDR and Dolby Vision properly and costs far less to run.

- madVR 0.92.17 and MPC Video Renderer 0.10.6.2555 - two renderers, so you can compare them on your own hardware.
- Codec Tweak Tool 6.7.7 and MediaInfo Lite 26.05 - manage what is installed, and inspect what is inside a file.
- Icaros 3.3.6 - thumbnail provider and property handler for File Explorer.
Every component is optional in the installer, so you can decline anything you do not want. If you are not sure what your files actually need, our Codec Finder will tell you before you install.
What Is Not in Full
No encoders. The VFW and ACM codecs that older editing and capture software asks for, including x264, XviD, Lagarith, huffyuv, AC3ACM and LAME, are in the Mega variant only.
No GraphStudioNext either, despite what a lot of pages still say. In 19.8.5 that filter-graph tool ships with Mega and not with Full, so if you build or debug DirectShow chains, Mega is the variant you want.
ffdshow, Bass Audio Source and MPC Image Source are also Mega-only, and ffdshow is not even installed there by default.
Full or Standard?
Take Full if you have a desktop graphics card with headroom and you care about upscaling quality enough to spend an evening tuning it.
Take Standard if you want to install it and forget about it. That is most people, and there is no shame in it: you lose nothing except an option you were not going to use.
Take Mega only if you need the encoders or GraphStudioNext. The main K-Lite Codec Pack page covers the family as a whole.
Turning madVR On
Installing Full does not switch it on. madVR is registered but the pack keeps a safer renderer as the default, so you have to choose it.
- Open MPC-HC, then Options, then Playback, then Output.
- Set the video renderer to madVR and restart playback.
- Watch for dropped frames on your heaviest file. MPC-HC can show render statistics, and madVR has its own overlay.
- If it stutters, switch back to MPC Video Renderer. That is the correct outcome on hardware that cannot keep up, not a failed install.
Leave the madVR defaults alone at first. Its scaling options can consume any amount of GPU you give them, and the defaults are chosen to run on ordinary hardware.
What Changed in 19.8.5
- MPC-HC updated to 2.7.4.0.
- LAV Filters updated to 0.82.0-4.
- MPC Video Renderer updated to 0.10.6.2555, and it is now the default renderer on more older systems.
- Icaros Shell Extensions updated to 3.3.6.
- MediaInfo Lite updated to 26.05 and Codec Tweak Tool to 6.7.7.
The renderer default change matters here even if you plan to use madVR, because it decides what you see before you have configured anything. If video looks wrong straight after updating, that is where to look first.
Already have a K-Lite variant installed? Run the new installer over the top. The separate update pack sits at 19.8.0 because none was published for 19.8.5.
Who Should Look Elsewhere
If you want a player that carries its own decoders and leaves the rest of Windows alone, VLC and MPC-BE both do that. MPC-BE can also load madVR if you install it separately.
The tell that Full is not for you: you are reading about madVR to find out whether you need it. If the answer is not already yes, it is no.

Quick questions
What is the actual difference between Full and Standard?
madVR, and nothing else. In 19.8.5 the two variants are identical apart from that one renderer.
Does Full play more formats than Standard or Basic?
No. All four variants use the same LAV Filters decoders, so they play exactly the same files.
Does Full include encoding codecs?
No. VFW and ACM encoders such as x264, XviD and Lagarith are in the Mega variant only.
Do I need a powerful graphics card?
For madVR, a desktop GPU with some headroom helps. Everything else in the pack runs fine on any machine that can run Windows 10.
Is madVR still being developed?
Updates have been rare for years, which is why 0.92.17 has been current for a long time. It still works, and the pack keeps shipping it.
Can I install Full and just not use madVR?
Yes, and that is the default behaviour. You can also deselect it during setup, at which point you have installed Standard.
A file plays but has no sound. Which variant fixes that?
Any of them, since the missing piece is normally an AC3 or DTS decoder and those are in all four. Our AC3 and DTS audio guide explains how to check.
Will HEVC files play in the Windows Photos app after this?
No. Photos uses Media Foundation rather than DirectShow, so it needs its own decoder. Our HEVC troubleshooting guide covers the options.
