K-Lite Codec Pack Standard is the variant Codec Guide recommends for most people: the full set of decoders that lets Windows play almost any video or audio file, plus the MPC-HC player and the MPC Video Renderer needed for HDR playback.

Standard is the K-Lite variant to pick if you do not want to think about which K-Lite variant to pick.

It installs the codecs that let Windows play almost any video or audio file, plus a good player to watch them in.

Download K-Lite Codec Pack Standard 19.8.5 - 39.2 MB, free, Windows 7 through 11.

What Standard Adds Over Basic

Both variants install the same decoders, so both fix the same playback problems. The difference is that Standard also gives you a media player and the renderer that draws the picture.

That player is Media Player Classic Home Cinema, and the renderer is MPC Video Renderer, which is what makes HDR and Dolby Vision playback work properly.

You can see the difference in the download size: Basic is 21.3 MB, Standard is 39.2 MB, and nearly all of that gap is the player.

What Is Actually Inside It

  • LAV Filters - the decoders and splitters doing the real work, covering H.264, HEVC, VVC, VP9, AV1, MPEG-2, ProRes and the rest, with hardware acceleration where your GPU supports it.
  • MPC-HC - a light, fast player with a dark theme, seekbar preview and HDR support.
  • MPC Video Renderer - handles HDR tone mapping and Dolby Vision.
  • Icaros Shell Extensions - video thumbnails in File Explorer for formats Windows normally ignores.
  • Codec Tweak Tool and MediaInfo Lite - one manages what is installed, the other tells you what is inside a file. Related tools live in our codec identifiers section.

Audio is covered too: AC3, DTS, DTS-HD, TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, E-AC3, AAC, FLAC, Opus, WavPack and more. Subtitles render through the included filters, with DirectVobSub handling external SRT and ASS files.

Which Variant Do You Need?

Variant Adds over the one above Size
Basic Decoders only, no player 21.3 MB
Standard MPC-HC player and MPC Video Renderer 39.2 MB
Full GraphStudioNext and extra DirectShow filters 54.8 MB
Mega VFW and ACM codecs for video encoding and editing 65.2 MB

Standard is the developer's own recommendation for the average user, and it is the right answer unless you know why you want more.

Pick Basic if you already have a player you like and only need the decoders behind it. Pick Mega only if an old editing or capture program asks you for VFW codecs, which is rare in 2026.

The main K-Lite Codec Pack page covers the family as a whole if you want the wider picture first.

Already Have K-Lite Installed?

Just run the new installer over the top. It detects what you have, replaces the old components and keeps your settings.

There is a separate update pack for smaller upgrades, but it sits at 19.8.0 because the developer did not publish one for 19.8.5. Use the regular Standard installer instead.

The installer also cleans up after other packs, detecting and removing more than a hundred different codec bundles. That is the usual fix when playback has broken after years of installing random codecs.

What Changed in 19.8.5

That renderer change is the one to watch. If video looks wrong, stutters or shows the wrong colours after this update on an older graphics card, open MPC-HC, then Options, then Playback and Output, and switch the renderer back to Enhanced Video Renderer.

The developer is actively collecting reports on this, so it is worth sending your GPU model and driver version if you hit a problem. That feedback is how the defaults get fixed.

Installing Without the Bloat

The installer is fully customisable if you want it to be. You can deselect the player, skip the thumbnail extensions, choose your preferred decoder per format, or set audio and subtitle language preferences up front.

You can also just click through with the defaults, which is what most people should do. Uninstalling removes everything the pack added, including its registry keys.

If you are not sure which codec you are missing in the first place, our Codec Finder identifies it before you install anything.

Who Should Look Elsewhere

If you want one program that plays everything and touches nothing else on your system, a self-contained player is the better answer. VLC and MPC-BE both carry their own decoders and install no system-wide filters.

The tell is what you are trying to fix. Codec packs earn their place when the problem is Windows itself - blank thumbnails, silent files in other programs, a video editor that refuses an import. For "I just want to watch this file", a player is enough.

Other options are in our codec packs section.

Quick questions

Basic or Standard?

Standard, unless you already have a media player you are happy with. The only real difference is that Standard includes MPC-HC and the MPC Video Renderer.

Is it safe, and is it really free?

Yes on both. It is freeware from Codec Guide with no adware or bundled toolbars, and uninstalling reverses every change it made.

Do I need the 64-bit pack as well?

No. Current versions include both 32-bit and 64-bit codecs in one installer. The separate K-Lite Codec Pack 64-bit stopped at 9.9.9 years ago and is kept for archive purposes only.

Will it play HEVC and AV1 files?

Yes, both, in any DirectShow player. Windows apps that use Media Foundation instead, like Photos and Media Player, need the Media Foundation codecs or the HEVC Video Extension.

Do I have to use MPC-HC after installing?

No. The codecs work system-wide, so your existing player benefits too. You can decline the file associations during setup and keep using whatever you had.

My video plays but there is no sound. Is that a codec problem?

Usually the audio track rather than the pack. Our AC3 and DTS audio guide walks through it.
