What it actually does

The core job is batch resizing. Choose a ready-made profile such as 1K, 2K, 4K or Email, or set a target file size, and every selected picture is resized and saved in one pass.

Along the way it can convert formats, compress, rotate and crop, and copy or edit metadata. That makes it handy for shrinking phone photos before emailing them or preparing a batch of product shots for a website.

Your own profiles are saved as files in your Documents folder, so they sync through OneDrive to your other PCs.

Formats in and out

It reads almost anything you are likely to have on a Windows PC:

  • Everyday formats. JPEG, PNG, GIF including animated GIFs, BMP, TIFF and ICO.
  • Modern formats. WebP, HEIC, AVIF, JPEG XL and JPEG XR.
  • Documents and design files. PDF, PSD, SVG and WMF/EMF.
  • Camera RAW. DNG, Canon, Nikon, Sony and the other major brands, covered below.

On the way out you get JPEG, PNG, WebP with an optional lossless mode, HEIC, and multi-page PDF. If you want to test HEIC output first, grab some sample HEIC files.

Two formats lean on extras. HEIC may need Microsoft's free HEIF Image Extensions, and AVIF needs a free ImageMagick plugin that the developer links to.

If Windows itself will not show HEIC photos as thumbnails, CopyTrans HEIC fixes that side.

For WebP and JPEG XL thumbnails, install the WebP Image Extensions and the JPEG XL Image Extension.

Camera RAW files

Light Image Resizer opens RAW files straight from the camera and turns them into normal JPEGs, which is the quickest way to share a shoot without opening an editor.

The codecs linked above are optional. They only matter if you also want RAW thumbnails in File Explorer, and on Windows 11 Microsoft's Raw Image Extension covers most cameras in one install.

The extras that save a second program

  • Watermarks. Text or image, with transparency, plus tags that print the file size, dimensions or extension automatically.
  • PDF and collages. Combine photos into one PDF, split very tall images across pages, or lay several pictures out as a collage.
  • Light Image Editor. A small built-in editor for text, highlights, blur and shapes, for when one picture needs a quick note.
  • Screenshots and OCR. Take a screenshot and copy the text out of it, or run text recognition on JPEGs and PDFs so Windows search can find them by what they say.

What is new in 7.6

The 7.6 line adds support for AI models from Gemini, ChatGPT and OpenRouter, or a local model through Ollama if you would rather nothing left your PC.

An AI Vision task uses that model to write a comment about each image as part of a batch, and your model choice is saved with each profile. You bring your own account or local model; nothing is switched on by default.

Version 7 itself is where the right-click menu integration for Windows 11 arrived, along with the editor, OCR, HEIC output, lossless WebP and the OneDrive-synced profiles.

Free to use, with a paid unlock

You can download and use Light Image Resizer without paying. A licence unlocks the Pro version with a serial key.

The licence is a one-time purchase for the current major version, 7.x, with a 30-day money-back guarantee. A future version 8 would need a new key.

Who should look elsewhere

If you want a free tool with no paid tier, XnConvert does batch conversion with far more actions, on Windows, Mac and Linux.

FastStone Photo Resizer is the long-standing free alternative for Windows, and XnResize is the stripped-down option for resizing only.

Already use IrfanView? Its batch mode handles simple resizing jobs without installing anything else.

For editing one picture properly, layers and all, you want an editor instead: Paint.NET for quick work or GIMP for everything else.

Quick questions

Is Light Image Resizer free?

You can download and use it for free. A one-time licence unlocks the Pro version for the 7.x releases.

Is it the same as VSO Image Resizer?

Yes. VSO Image Resizer was renamed Light Image Resizer, and it is now published by ObviousIdea.

Can it convert HEIC to JPG in bulk?

Yes. Select the HEIC photos, right-click and choose a JPEG profile. If HEIC files will not open, install the HEIF Image Extensions first.

Does it work with camera RAW files?

Yes. DNG, Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax and Samsung RAW files can all be resized and converted to JPEG.

Which Windows versions does it need?

Windows 11, 10 or 8.1, 32-bit or 64-bit, with 4 GB of RAM. The right-click menu integration is built for Windows 11.

Is there a portable version?

Not of the current release. The developer only offers a portable build of the old version 5.

Is there a Mac version?

No. It is Windows only. On a Mac, XnConvert does the same job natively.
