TeraBox gives you 1TB of free cloud storage on your Android phone, far more than Google Drive, OneDrive or iCloud hand out for nothing.
The catch is in how the free plan is run: ads, slow transfers and limits that push you toward the paid Premium plan.
It is a good place for big, non-sensitive files like old videos and photo backups, and a poor place for anything private.
Use TeraBox as a free overflow drive for media you would not mind a stranger seeing. Encrypt anything personal before uploading, and keep a second copy somewhere else.
What TeraBox Actually Does - in Plain Terms
TeraBox is a cloud storage app. It backs up photos and videos from your phone, stores any other files you upload, and lets you share them by link.
It is made by Flextech Inc., a company based in Tokyo, and it started life under the name Dubox before being renamed. The same account works in the TeraBox apps for Windows, Mac and iPhone, so files you upload on Android show up there too.
Recent versions also bundle AI tools, which is why the app now calls itself a cloud and AI space. Storage is still the reason most people install it.
What the Free Plan Really Gives You
The headline 1TB is real. What you give up for it is speed, quality and comfort.
- Ads everywhere. Expect pop-ups and video ads in the mobile app, some of which cannot be skipped.
- Slow transfers. Free accounts are throttled, and reviewers measured large downloads running several times slower than on Premium.
- A 4GB file limit. Single files bigger than that will not upload on the free plan.
- Lower video quality. Videos play back from the cloud at reduced resolution, which Cloudwards measured at 480p.
- A short recycle bin. Deleted files can be recovered for only 10 days.
Premium removes the ads and the speed cap and raises the storage to 2TB. Prices change by region and by offer, so check the figure in the app before you subscribe.
Privacy: What to Keep Off TeraBox
TeraBox encrypts files while they travel to and from its servers, but it does not offer zero-knowledge encryption. In plain terms, the company holds the keys and could, in principle, see what you store.
Independent reviewers have also criticised its privacy policy as long and vague about when data may be shared. None of that makes it unusable, but it does decide what belongs there.
Keep ID scans, bank documents and private photos off it, or lock them first. On a PC, 7-Zip can pack files into a password-protected archive with AES-256 encryption before you upload them.
Which File to Download
The download page carries one file, TeraBox_Android_web_v4.26.5.apk. It is a plain APK, so it installs on a tap once you allow installs from your browser or file manager.
It needs Android 6.0 or newer. If your phone has Google Play, installing from Play gets you automatic updates, and this APK is the route for phones without it.
Installing the APK Safely
Only take TeraBox from a clean source. Search results are full of modded and premium unlocked TeraBox APKs, and those are exactly the files that come with surprises.
Our APK Checker reads the package name and signature from a file before you install it. The real app's package name is com.dubox.drive, so anything else is not TeraBox.
Not sure whether the app will run on a phone without Google services? Drop the file into our Play Store dependency check first.

Making the Most of the Space
Shrinking photos before backup stretches the free space further. Image Toolbox can resize and convert pictures in batches on the phone.
Once your photos are safely in the cloud, SD Maid SE helps clear out the leftover junk that fills Android storage.
For watching your own videos at full quality, download them back to the phone and open them in VLC for Android, which plays almost any format with no extra codecs.
Who Should Look Elsewhere
If you only want to move files between two phones in the same room, you do not need the cloud at all. MX Share sends files directly over Wi-Fi.
Switching to a new Samsung phone? Samsung Smart Switch moves photos, contacts and apps in one go, without uploading anything.
And if the files are sensitive, the tell is simple: would you be uncomfortable if someone else opened them? Then they need encryption first or a storage service with zero-knowledge encryption instead.
Quick questions
Is TeraBox really free?
Yes, the 1TB plan costs nothing. You pay for it with ads, slower transfers, a 4GB file limit and reduced video quality, which Premium removes.
Is TeraBox safe to use?
It is a mainstream app with hundreds of millions of installs, but it is not end-to-end encrypted. Use it for files you would not mind being seen, and encrypt anything private before uploading.
Who owns TeraBox?
Flextech Inc., a company based in Tokyo, Japan. The service was originally called Dubox.
What Android version do I need?
Android 6.0 or newer for version 4.26.5.
Should I install a modded TeraBox APK for free Premium?
No. Premium is checked on TeraBox's servers, so a modded app cannot really unlock it, and unofficial builds are a common way to hide malware.
Can I use TeraBox on my PC too?
Yes. TeraBox has apps for Windows, Mac and iPhone, and the same account and storage work on all of them.
