DVDFab Passkey removes the copy protection from DVDs and Blu-rays quietly in the background, the moment you insert a disc.

Your other software then sees an ordinary, unprotected disc it can play, copy or convert.

It is paid software with a free trial, and a cut-down free edition called Passkey Lite.

What Passkey Actually Does

Most commercial discs are encrypted, and many programs simply refuse to read them. Passkey runs as a small background driver that decrypts the disc as it is read, so nothing has to be ripped or extracted first.

That makes it a helper rather than a ripper. It does no copying or converting itself; it unlocks the disc so the tools you already use can do their job.

• DVDs. The full version removes CSS, region codes, RCE, APS, UOPs, ARccOS, RipGuard and CORE X2, among others.
• Blu-ray and 4K UHD. AACS, BD+, BD-Live, region codes and UOPs, with the 4K edition covering UHD discs.
• Recorded discs. Separate editions handle Blu-rays recorded on TV recorders (BDAV), including 4K recordings.
• Region changes. Lets you switch the region of player software without using up its limited region resets.

How It Fits Into Your Disc Workflow

The tell is whether your tool can read encrypted discs on its own. HandBrake and VidCoder cannot, so with Passkey running in the background they can open a protected DVD or Blu-ray directly.

• Install Passkey and let it start with Windows. It sits in the notification area.
• Insert the disc and wait a few seconds while Passkey reads and unlocks it.
• Open your ripper, converter or player and load the disc as if it had no protection.

For one-to-one DVD copies, CloneDVD or DVD Shrink pair with it.

ImgBurn then burns the result, and CloneBD does the same copying job for Blu-rays.

After ripping, MKVToolNix lets you drop unwanted audio and subtitle tracks without re-encoding.

Playing Discs on Your PC

With Passkey running, VLC Media Player and MPC-BE open protected discs and skip the forced trailers and warnings.

PotPlayer does the same, with more control over picture and subtitles.

Full Blu-ray menus are a weak spot in free players, which mostly play the main movie and its chapters. For a TV-connected PC, Kodi gives a remote-friendly way to browse discs and ripped files.

Free Lite or the Paid Version

Passkey Lite is free and handles everyday region and playback restrictions, but it stops where the stronger protections start. The paid editions are sold separately for DVD and for Blu-ray, or together in DVDFab's bundles.

The quickest test is to try the full version on the disc that is giving you trouble before you buy. If Lite already opens your discs, there is nothing to pay for.

Other Background Decrypters

• AnyDVD HD is the long-standing paid rival, and the usual choice when Passkey has not caught up with a new title yet.
• Xreveal works the same way and has a free build, but that build expires 90 days after each release unless you buy Pro.
• DVD43 is the old free CSS remover for DVDs. It is no longer developed and only runs on 32-bit Windows 8 and older.

System Requirements

DVDFab lists Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit, for current Passkey releases. You also need a DVD, Blu-ray or UHD-compatible drive for the discs you want to read.

The driver starts with Windows and uses next to no resources until a disc goes in. Some 4K drives need their firmware changed before they can read UHD discs, and Passkey includes a tool for that.
